Fruit and Veggie Co-op
You've probably seen the signs all over campus this week - we have a fruit and veggie co-op! But what is it? How does it work? What kind of stuff do you get? How can I join? I asked myself all these questions. Then I went to the informational meeting. Then, tonight, I got FRUIT! It is delicious, organic, varied, and mostly local.
Participants pay 6-8 points per week for just fruit, or 14-16 for fruit and vegetables. Most people also sign up to help run the co-op for a week. This involves deciding which produce to order, picking it up from Weshop when it arrives, and cleaning up the leftovers. Because the co-op is run by students and has enough members to order in bulk, you get quite a bit of fruit for your money. Why pay $1.99 for a subpar apple at the campus center when you can get one through the co-op for less than a point?
It sounds like a bit of a commitment, but it really isn't. You can sign up for one week at a time if you just want to try it out.
And it's really easy - if its not your week to volunteer, all you have to do is show up at the Outhouse shed on Thursday night or Friday and pick up your produce. Here's the share I just got:
This week's share included:
- 4 bananas
- 2 apples
- 2 nectarines
- 2/3 carton of rasberries
I just ate one of the nectarines, and it was delicious.
If you want to get your very own delicious, fresh produce, just sign up in the binder in Weshop. Make sure to sign up by Tuesday morning to get your fruit and veggies on Thursday.

I'm a little confused now. If you pay one week at a time, are you obligated to volunteer at Long Lane Farms once a week?
Nope! In fact, there's no volunteering at Long Lane farm at all - as far as I know, the two institutions are completely unaffiliated (though I'm sure there's a lot of overlap in members).
The volunteering consists solely of ordering fruits and veggies, picking them up from Weshop, setting them up at Outhouse, and cleaning up after everything has been picked over. Because so many people are doing the co-op this year, everyone only has to do this once per semester.
