I think it's playing on the idea that wesleyan is a "safe" place, everyone is welcome UNLIKE the united States. Not bad, but def one of those wesleyan-stereotypes
But they're making fun of the idea that Wesleyan is a safety school. They're presenting (mockingly) an Ivy League whackoff attitude. Why is this making people sad?
dude, the audience seems to have gotten the joke--whatever it was-- which means that the word wesleyan actually means something to them, which is pretty aWESome. '05
I have to agree with the aWESome sentiment. With harvard, yale and columbia admissions rates in the single digits, there's very little shame in being a so-called backup school these days. It is widely acknowledged (there was a NYT article on it just this week) that even back up schools are incredibly hard to get into. Hence, the awesomeness of even being mentioned on the Daily Show! -JW
Hell, I'm even willing to bet that the "What can Brown do for you?" tag line was a reference to that other school, the one in Providence. What do you think?
No offense, jonwesley, but why would it be? In context, they were talking about race, not college admissions. That was just a tangential joke. I'm pretty sure the Brown thing had nothing to do with the school..
No offense taken. It was just a thought. I mean, it did sound like the cheesy sort of catchphrase an Ivy PR dept. might resort to; I was just wondering if there was a real counterpart? If not, then I suppose it was funny just limited to the racial context. I mean, none of it makes sense without some idea of what a typical Ivy whackoff is like, right?
I was graduated from wes in '80..i watched the jon stewart show...it was abundantly clear and totally unambiguous what he meant: that Wesleyan is a safety school. It was a low blow for the school, and there was no other way to take it. I was shocked that he chose wes b/c the writers most have assumed that that is how the school is thought of universally, otherwise they would have chosen another school as the punchline. Not so great.
I think you're missing the point. Can you imagine the brainstorming that must have gone into coming up with the right school? Trinity? Nah, too close to the truth. Middlebury? Maybe. Tufts? Too cliche. Wesleyan? Now, that's funny. You saying, you wouldn't have felt just a trace of jealousy if they'd chosen Middlebury instead?
Knowing what goes on in writers rooms, I'm pretty sure this was an inside joke to some friend of the writers who went to Wes. Also, what can brown do for you refers to the UPS campaign.
Along those same lines (small New England liberal arts colleges being used as political metaphors) the following item likewise begs the question, "Why Wesleyan?":
Wesleying is a 100% student-run and student-generated blog. We are neither sponsored by nor in any way affiliated with the administration of Wesleyan University.
As of March 2009, we have moved to wesleying.org. While this site will no longer be updated, our archives remain accessible via the drop-down menu below.

No, it's really just calling Wesleyan a safty school (hence the talk about the point system being like the SATs).
It's stupid and makes me sad because I normally like the Daily Show.

How did Stewart respond?

The responses by you self-righteous Wesleyan students is hysterical and proves why the picked exactly the right school to mock.
