Bon Appetit off to a bad start
Here's the dining brochure, which upperclassmen should be getting soon (click to enlarge):
Okay, several things that pissed me off:
- No mention of how much the dining plans actually cost. You know, in real money. I understand now that it's under Residential Comprehensive Fee, but why isn't it listed on the brochure where you sign up for the freaking meal plan?!
- Weshop is back to its shitty 2-6 weekend schedule. Unnngghhhh.
- You know those rumors about them extending the hours of late night? Yeah, not true. The weekday hours actually got pushed up an hour, so now it closes at 12:30am instead of 1:30am. That'll be fun during finals.
- Sophomores can't be on all points. Oh my god, '10, I'm so, so sorry.
- The Daniel Family Commons, which the website says is "An international buffet exclusively for faculty, staff and invited guests." Wait...WHAT?!
Promise: "We want the transition to be as easy and transparent as possible in readiness for the college's summer conferences. "
Reality: "Hill said that criticism among dining staff has mainly concerned Bon Appétit's lack of communication. It is not clear whether Summerfields will be a fully operational facility next year, serving lunch, dinner, and late night snacks. The completion date of the new campus center has not been announced. Although the company has officially promised to employ all 84 current staff members, many are wondering whether to look for new jobs."
Promise: "To develop a partnership with the community to implement an innovative and highly satisfactory dining program"
Response: Hey okay that's really big of you! Here are our suggestions! (Notice the VERY FIRST ITEM that comes up is the dining schedule)
Reality: No kthxbye.
At this rate they'd better not only keep Grandma, Wendy and Dave, but give them huge pay raises and buy them, I don't know, puppies and cakes and dental insurance. You know, to cover the cavities from the cakes.
Bonus wank: If you go to their website and click on the any of the menu links, you get this lovely feel-good legend with no explanation whatsoever except a link to Circle of Responsibility website, which appears to be one of those "Hay guyz take care of urselves ;)" deals...

one positive: summerfields open for dinner on the weekends
having lived in the butts last year, that's HUGE.....walking to mocon on the weekends was a huge pain in the ass (as i'd imagine walking to usdan could become)
lol. I knew Bon Appetit was talking big. Remember all those promises they were throwing around when we first signed the contract? And now we see the reality of the situation.
OK, it's not that bad, but it's less than what we were expecting, and less than what we were led to believe would be provided. Judgment for the plaintiff in the amount of lesson learned.
why don't you wait to try the damn food before condemning it so much? or wait to see if they do listen to complaints?
also, people wondering if they will have a job is different than not having a job.
this seems like a lot of jumping to conclusion-ness.
kudos to bon appetit for better lunch and dinner hours, if nothing else... crappy late nite hours though.
the point is not that they are necessarily laying off workers. it's that they have not delivered on their call for transparency.
You've covered a lot of my complaints... but I'm going to rant anyway.
They seem to not comprehend the idea of "Late Night." Only having it open a half hour later than Weshop does not help, especially on a campus where most everyone seems to stay up a LOT past 12:30. In view of finals, though: Late Night wasn't open during finals or reading week. If they can fix that, it would be an improvement.
Thanks for explaining the "Daniel Family Commons." I find that upsetting. I wonder how much better the food will be?
P.S. Anyone else notice the description of MoCon on their website?
"Its three hundred seat dining room shows off a panoramic view enhanced by thirty foot high windows looking out onto tennis courts and wooded trails."
I suppose that's accurate, if you could consider "Vine Street and a parking lot" to be "wooded trails." Maybe it's a euphemism for graveyards.
It's actually pretty odd that Wes does not have a fac/staff dining area already - what's the problem with adding one?
I was upset about the late-night schedule being pushed up an hour, but thanks to anonymous #1, I feel better. But not much. Being someone who regularly stays up until 3am, it'd be helpful to at least find someplace to get coffee at 1am during the week. Maybe this'll force me into a having a healthier sleep schedule.
Hey, the Marketplace is open at 8am. Now I feel a lot better.
