Washington Monthly Ranking

Thomas Coen '07 writes in:

I noticed you blogged about the Princeton Review and US News rankings, but didn't mention the Washington Monthly. From the press release:

Unlike U.S. News' prestige-focused ranking system, the Washington Monthly rates individual schools based on their tangible contributions to the public interest: on the degree to which they recruit and graduate low-income students; produce PhDs and research; and encourage students to serve in ROTC, the Peace Corps and other service programs. While other guides ask, "what can colleges do for you," The Washington Monthly asks, "what are colleges doing for the country?"

It's a good question and rightly so Wesleyan was near the top, ranked#4 (though we were #3 last year).

Check it out yourself:

Also, there's an article on higher ed in there by Ben Adler, '02.

Go Wes!

Oh joy, a new way to rank tertiary educational institutions on a linear scale...

Wait this one ranks us really high compared to our other rankings? Then I wholeheartedly support it!

so wait..if we tied with wheaton and VMI, why did they give us 4th?

apparently, even tertiary NSF research is enough to propel us ahead of Amherst and Swarthmore (of course, what does that say, about research at Amherst and Swarthmore?) :/

Greetings Wes people...

You may want to check out the current debate developing over at EphLog. It gives you a sense of the insecurity levels some of our Little Three brothers have with regards to the competition U.S. News & World Report seems to be getting from Washington Monthly...Quite interesting.
