I've gone back and forth on this, but in the end I don't think we've had a real debate on Shanklin.
It's not the design of the new building, or the cost, or even just historical preservation. It's about process and a desire for us to come together and say together that we are ok seeing Shanklin go.
If people don't want to see it destroyed for a quad, or believe we can find some sort of compromise (Olin worked out pretty well, in my mind), then, yes, join the facebook group below (b/c it still does have a hold on us):
I love Shanklin. Have any of you seen the NYU hospital or medical school on 1st Avenue in the 20s/30s in NYC? They built a new glass structure over the facade and a portion of the old existing building. Not sure if this would work here, but . . .
Can't they lift Shanklin and move it to the location of the new East Wing, like they do on those shows on the Discovery Channel? The whole move can be filmed and included in a show hosted by Danny Forster '99 of that Extreme Engineering show.
I've talked to some of the professors in the biology and chem departments, and they've said Shanklin just couldn't be saved. they apparently begged Payette (the architect firm) to come up with a way to incorporate Shanklin into the new science center, but they just can't find a not-too-expensive way to do it. it's apparently cheaper just to replace it than gut the inside. what a shame...
Wesleying is a 100% student-run and student-generated blog. We are neither sponsored by nor in any way affiliated with the administration of Wesleyan University.
As of March 2009, we have moved to wesleying.org. While this site will no longer be updated, our archives remain accessible via the drop-down menu below.

At least we can start a discussion. And then we'll see where we go from there. The Trustee meeting is less than a month away. So it's now or never.

Strange. Shanklin weighs like a phantom limb over the entire project. It's not there, yet everything seems painfully respectful of it somehow.
It's not much of an improvement over Hall-Atwater, I'm afraid. Say, what you will about Exley, at least it looks like a science center.
the science center looks fine. stop being precious.
Hey, I'm with you. Just build the damned thing.
