Wesleyan in Converse's Drive Thru
Converse is celebrating a century of its existence with an ad campaign, "My Drive Thru", that's currently assaulting major cities, featuring an array of hip artists in standoffish poses - 3/17 of whom, Santogold and Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT, are Wes alums.
Left to right: Ben Goldwasser (MGMT), James Rushent (Does It Offend You, Yeah?), and YACHT
Left to right: Eleanor Friedberger (Fiery Furnaces), Sophie (Care Bears on Fire), and Andrew VanWyngarden (MGMT)The campaign is spearheaded by Pharrell Williams (N.E.R.D.), Santogold, and Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), who apparently bonded over their love of Chuck Taylors to pump out a thumping original collaborative track, "My Drive Thru", best described by Converse as "Three Artists. One Song.", which has been available for free download at the Converse website for the past month.
If you're gonna call this selling out, it looks/sounds pretty good.

I've never heard Care Bears on Fire but what a dumb name
hi,
not to be a hater or anything, but can we ever focus on other Wes alums doing big things in the world? I know you like MGMT and Santogold, but the content gets a little dull when that's all we see three times a week on this site. I like wesleying, and think it's nice to see updates on successful alumni, but really, there are other great folks out there doing big things. Let's put some effort into highlighting them too, if that's the dominant theme for summer. k?
ok.
i enthusiastically second anon 9:15. Well said.
We're more than happy to post about other Wes alums doing currently notable things, which we do whenever we hear such news. But especially in the dull summertime, we operate mostly on feedback. Lately a lot of blog-worthy stuff has been coming in about MGMT and Santogold, but we've still been trying to get stuff up about other alums - like we have in recent posts about Lin-Manuel Miranda, Halley Feiffer, Stone & Stone, and Matthew Weiner. If you know of any others (especially ones not in the entertainment industry) please email them over, we'll definitely post about it. And thanks for not being an ass in your comments.
how about kim stolz being like a very regularly appearing VJ on mtv recently? cool stuff.
MGMT+Santogold= more stupid mindless hispster nonsense
Does hipster even have a definition anymore? Right now, I feel like it is used to describe a variety of people who don't all have the same interests or act the same way. Someone shed some light on this for me. All I know is when someone calls you a "hipster" it's supposed to be the ultimate insult. I don't know though, I'm not that offended though.
ps. Sheek, you're doing a great job. Let people send you WES in the news updates- otherwise don't sweat the complainers. They're not running a blog.
As an alum, I agree with anon 9:15. I'm really happy to see these people enjoying a lot of success, but I would love to see some non-entertainment industry folk profiled as well.
Ever thought about running a feature like "cool stuff wes alums are doing" and let people submit info on their friends who are busy saving the environment, having art shows, getting published, etc? i know a lot of alums who don't think what they're doing is newsworthy, but it's interesting from a wesleyan perspective.
The music video is up, for those interested: http://youtube.com/watch?v=GPZ5fnYFI4Q

care bears on fire are 7th grade girls from Brooklyn. which might explain the name.
11:11 am - That's a good idea and I already have something like it in mind, but again, if you want to see something on this site, send it to us! Hearing about Wes people (current students, professors, alumni, whoever) doing interesting things is great, but how are we gonna know if it's not in our inbox.
P.S. the video's up
To reiterate what Sheek is saying--if we hear information about alums, we will post it. If you want something posted, send it to us! If you have a friend who's an alum doing something cool, send it to us! It's really hard for us to hear about these things otherwise.
oh cmon don't give me that "does hipster have a definition" bullshit. theyre everywhere at wes. chances are you are one, you hip hip mothafucka
start a MGMT exclusive blog
well, that video was pretty fly. whatever you think about Santogold, she's got style
