Fare thee well, ye olde Reading Week

This semester, we will no longer have four or five consecutive days to procras—er, study—during Reading Week. In fact, we will no longer have a Reading Week (even if that was never the official term for it, it usually bordered on being a week).

Behold! The Academic Calendar reveals the schedule:

December 8: classes end
December 9-10: Reading Period
December 11-12: final exams
December 13-14: Reading Period
December 15-16: final exams
December 17: housing closes
Dec. 13-14—the second half of Reading Period—is the weekend.

Me too... but, on the bright side, it looks like this is just for the fall semester. The spring semester has five straight days allotted for Reading Period.

whaAaA? this sucks. people rely on reading week for survival!

dec. 8 is a monday..so we have a weekend, one day of class, two more days free, two days of exams, another weekend, and then two more days of exams. This could actually be a good thing, spreading out exams like that.

true... like a "buffer" day before at least every exam day. this may be genius!

I think I remember reading that the change was partly due to getting everyone done slightly earlier before the holidays... hence why the spring semester wasn't changed.

Does anyone know who we can contact about trying to understand why this decision was made and how we can attempt to change it back?

I really like that actually. Considering that I had a bunch of finals and papers due all at once. (as do most people) So, I was practically shitting myself for about three days. This is better, it spreads things out and gets us out earlier. As long as you manage your time, it is a pretty awesome schedule.

i'm glad other people like and/or are open to this idea... i thought i would be the only one.

i hate this new schedule. i want it changed back! there's no way to spread out your work; not all of us procrastinate.

this is going to sound really bad, but this means that we don't have any party time at the end of the semester. just classes ending, study-hardcore-time, exams, more studying hardcore, more exams, going home. it's nice to have a day or two to relax/party before going into crazy finals mode!

i never have time to party before exams. end of last semester was particularly bananas. i like this new scheme

I think it's going to benefit some people and screw over others. If your exams are nicely spread out you'll have plenty of buffer time and that might help you focus on specific things better.

On the other hand, there are always the people who end up having all of their exams on the first day, and this is going to be killer for them.

agreed with sam. if you are one of the unluckies who has all of their exams during the first exam period, then you have 2 days to study for all of them instead of the *6* days we had before.

Also note, this is going to be a killer for any end of the year concerts/shows/performances. Not only was reading week as someone above put it, "party time", but it is also an very important time for the campus groups to show what they have spent the entire semester working on. With a two day reading period, not only are most of the performances going to overlap, but who is going to take time out of their precious few study days to actually go see them?

holy shit i so fucking regret going to wesleyan

I agree with Sam 100%. This is a good system for those who have exams and papers spread out, and it's fine with those who have them all at the end, too(since it is essentially the same as reading week). But it’s going to KILL those who have everything due in the first two exam days. Have they considered how to counter that at all?

Either way, I still liked the old system better. That day or two too relax right at the beginning was key.

Also, I don't want Christmas break to be longer! It's too long already. I'd rather have extra time before exams at school than after exams at home.

agreed! with 3:52.

also, i just love reading week. for me, it is such a nice time to settle down with all the things i learned and figure things out. also, i like studying each thing/working on each paper a little bit everyday, going back and forth. now i'll be forced to cram, basically. that sucks.

Reading week was the longest time away from classes I had to play catchup during the semester. Like many others, most of my exams/papers were due during the first two days of finals week. In fact, I barely remember staying around Wesleyan for more than the second day of finals, since 3/4 of my classes required final papers or take-home exams.

9:17: Same here. I really hope profs who assign papers and take home exams start spreading out the due dates more, because I literally don't know how I would have gotton all my work done in past semesters with only two days to write my papers in.

yea professors had better not make things due the first day of exam period... that would suck.

hoho I went to Wesleyan back when it was GOOD

I think this new schedule is an improvement in terms of spacing out finals, but I really wish we had a day or two on campus after the end of finals, just to unwind and socialize before going home. In previous years it's been nice to have a few party days before finals, but then all of finals week is hardcore studying, and then just going home without doing anything fun on campus (unless you're a senior). Not a good note to end on, I think.

i'm pissed. this sucks.

I agree with Devon- this new schedule really hurts the shows that are going up that weekend- our show's opening night is going to be an exam day- how are we supposed to get people to come see it, let alone get people willing to help out?

Anonymous said...

the amount of time before the first exam days should be longer- not only for shows and de-stressing party time [because it's the last time we'll be able to], but also because many intro classes schedule their finals on the first day. and other prof's just like getting their class finals out of the way. the rest of the change is fine in my book.

Anonymous said...

agree with 12:49. I tend to procrastinate like hell during Reading Week, so this should be good for me in terms of studying. but it blows that there won't be time to just chill for a day or two.

Anonymous said...

jenn: intro classes aren't "on the first day." there is a rotation that each class goes through, as desgined by the registrar... if it's on the first day one year, it moves back to the second day the following year, etc. etc. it's a four/five year cycle and it's luck of the draw when you take the class. next year the intro classes you have in mind won't be first

this is okay. those of us who have all of our exams on the 15th and 16th still get a reading week, i guess.

Anonymous said...

Wow I'm glad I graduated this in 2008. I can't imagine having no reading week. Good luck next semester!
