Obama-Biden '08

CNN cites "multiple sources" informing it that Barack Obama has picked longtime Delaware senator Joe Biden to be his running mate. The New York Times has also posted an article with the same news. The text message to his supporters is scheduled to be sent this morning. Both Evan Bayh (Indiana) and Tim Kaine (Virginia) have been informed that they have not been picked, as has Hillary.

CNN.com: "Sources: Obama picks Joe Biden as VP candidate"
New York Times: "Obama Chooses Biden as Running Mate"
ABC News: "Biden's Stock Rises in Obama Vice Presidential Speculation"
Boston Globe: "Obama says he has picked running mate"

big mistake

really? I think it's a great choice

So much for "Change." Biden may be the ultimate Washington insider. Add this to the fuel he gave Republicans recently by saying (on Face the Nation!) paraphrasing: Obama's still lacking the experience to be president and "talking points don't get you there." I fear the Repub attack machine will have a field day with this. It will be even worse if McCain picks a woman for Veep.

Terrible.

Obama's message of change can only take him so far. Now he needs tried-and-true experience backing up what most people perceive to be empty rhetoric. The rest of the potential VPs on the short list, while they may be so-called Washington Outsiders, do not bolster the Obama campaign in the areas he needs it most.

If anything, the recent Georgia conflict has brought Obama's relative inexperience with foreign policy to the forefront. He cannot expect to win this campaign on domestic economic issues alone. Biden is a strong, experienced candidate. I'm sure he'll do his best not to say anything stupid in the months to come.

maybe Obama wants to "balance the ticket" by picking a racist....

Anonymous said...

oh please, biden has done a lot of good, quit cherry picking

Anonymous said...

i hope obama asks for a work cited on each of biden's speeches

Anonymous said...

I like his politics but his soundbites do make him seem like kind of a jerk... (I felt that way about Bill Clinton, too, though, and he did a lot of great stuff)

"Don't Cherry pick. Biden has done a lot of good"

You know you're in trouble when you bring out the big rationalizations.

My 2 big problems with Biden (Mr. Plagiarist himself, btw) is that the strengths he bring to the ticket are not what Obama needs right now. 1) Like Obama, Biden is a senator and has never governed anything. Senators tend to be great negotiators but have a hard time with delegation and managing budgets and needs across diverse areas because they never have had to do this in their senate careers. 2) Biden has a LONG history of putting his foot in his mouth - something that has doomed all 3 of his presidential bids. (2b - there is a LOT of Biden criticizing Obama on the record during the primaries, both on film and in print. The Repubs will use this endlessly).

This is a disaster waiting to happen. The only thing that could help is if McCain is actually stupid enough to pick Lieberman.

The most likely VP choice for McCain at this point is Romney, who also said some pretty negative things about McCain during the primary race. I really don't think either campaign will be too eager to jump on that ship, as it's something they'd like to forget about.

Joe Biden as he began his presidential bid: "I've had a great relationship [with Indian Americans]," Biden said. "In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian-Americans moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking."

And early in the primaries:
"I think Senator Obama is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy"

But he's not a racist...

Don't talk to me about cherry picking. This guy, when he's unscripted or off the cuff, has revealed his real ideas about people of color over the years.

I have lost so much respect for Obama in the last 24 hours. To me, this, more than anything, shows a tremendous lapse in jugdement, this in his most important decision since securing the nomination. Disgusting.

also Romney is a big Muppet, and not at all an asset to McCain except in getting the rich white male Republican/Mormon votes.

Did everyone just conveniently forget that Barak Obama rode his opposition to the Iraq War all the way to the nomination, and yet he's just picked a running mate who voted for it!? Change!? Joe Biden is more of the same. or let me put it this way: of all the democratic leaders Obama could've picked, THIS is the person he feels most comfortable being a heartbeat away from the presidency?

It leaves me really wondering if Obama is even running his own campaign anymore, which also makes me wonder who will run his administration. I think this move will alienate a large part of his base and not offset it with enough votes from the other side. Mistake and HUGE flaw in judgment.

@12:54: lighten the fuck up. if a black person says the sky is green and a white person corrects hir, i'm assuming that makes the white person a racist in your eyes (and those of 90% of our wonderful overly PC society, for that matter). sheesh. learn to laugh.

i can guarantee if a black person were making jokes about a white person--or if biden weren't white and made the same remarks--you'd be rolling on the floor.

maybe I just don't get it, but as far as I can tell, Obama IS "articulate and bright and clean and a nice looking guy". That sounds like four compliments to me.

And of course Biden criticized Obama in the primary. HE WAS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. Obviously Biden's first choice to win the nomination was himself.

Ben said...

@2:48: Agreed. Lest we forget Hillary's "red phone" ad.

Anonymous said...

2:48- what kind of compliment is clean? "Wow, you're looking really clean today." it's just not the kind of thing you say to/about someone... unless there's the assumption that they'd otherwise be unclean.

Anonymous said...

he means clean cut dumbo. He's talking about a fucking senator, not just some random guy. It's obviously assumed that mr. obama showers, so Biden obviously did not need to stipulate that. He was complimenting Obama, and race is being read into that quote. Plus, Biden has a great record and is a mover and shaker in Washington. Give him a chance.

Anonymous said...

If he's a senator, shouldnt he automatically be clean?

Anonymous said...

found these under dictionary.com's def of clean

5.characterized by a fresh, wholesome quality
11. morally pure; innocent; upright; honorable

..fucktards (and i mean that in the literal sense)

bidens a racist, get over it. he wouldnt have said that if the guy looked just like him.

Anonymous said...

Regarding "clean" - that's a throwback to pre-civil rights rhetoric. Many racists and white supremacists purported that black people were dirty, or because of the color of their skin, they could be dirty and you wouldn't know it. "Clean" was a back-handed compliment toward a black person from a white person. It mean, "the right kind of black person." That's why this comment by Biden drew so much scathing criticism and scorn.

Does anyone remember that the VP, besides campaigning, doesn't actually matter?

Anonymous said...

Wow really, 11:51? Are you saying VP Dick Cheney didn't really matter at all in the past 8 years? Really?

Anonymous said...

hey. chill. obama would be president, not biden. and biden can offer TREMENDOUS advice in regards to foreign policy to ANYONE. personally, i'm thrilled he's on the ticket and not worried even for a second that he would compromise Obama's positions on important issues. Obama is strong-minded... i don't think Biden would make him racist (even if Biden were racist... which he isn't).

Can we also consider for a second that ALL the other potential options for VP are incredibly boring? Biden is very engaging... i like listening to what he has to say. plus, despite some misguided views, he is highly intelligent.

Anonymous said...

i dont think hillary is boring at all

Anonymous said...

Yeah, she's just totally in with Big Business and lobbyists...

Anonymous said...

Agh Clintards! Don't torpedo our party.

Anonymous said...

8:03 - and biden isn't?!

Anonymous said...

All the rationalizations are coming out now! I love it. And the fractured talk of "unity." The Dems are going to screw this all up (see 04 when Kerry couldn't beat a war-time president who NO ONE liked) and McCain will be inaugurated in January 09. I LOVE IT!!!!

Anonymous said...

fuck off 1:38. you can't tear us apart.

Anonymous said...

Nope. You're going to do that yourselves.

CNN reported yesterday - much to their own Obama-leaning dismay - that 23% of Dems who supported Hillary in the primaries now plan to vote for Big Mac. What was so disconcerting, Anderson Cooper said with the gravitas usually saved for natural disasters, is that the poll was take 24 hours AFTER Biden was formally announced as Obama's VP. If even half this number holds up in the general election Obama will lose.

And if McCain picks Colin Powell, a rumor now gaining steam, that may draw an additional 5% of the African American vote (Again, CNN saying this, this time Wolf "I love Barack" Blitzer).

If Barack doesn't get his hoped for 10 point bounce off the convention it could be game over before September even comes. Love it!

More good news for the Dems:

Infighting

Defections of primary delegates to the dark side(wtf!):

And yes, the liberalest liberals are now using the race card against each other (I know this MUST be a lie because it's Fox - then again, it's on the AP wire too:

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/08/25/chicago-clinton-supporter-obama-mentor-called-me-uncle-tom/

Every four years The Republicans seem like they are out of it and every four years one thing comes charging to their rescue - the Democratic Party. Is this a great country or what!?

Anonymous said...

Biden actually said...

"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,...I mean, that's a storybook, man."

It was the "FIRST" that got him in trouble not the "CLEAN".

Ironbow said...

Obama will lose the election because America still has significant numbers of ignorant, prejudiced people who will not vote for a black man under any circumstances.

It is truly sad that, with this country about to fall off the cliff on so many levels, voters may actually end up electing a person who could well produce the final push that sends us tumbling into the abyss. Very, very sad.

Anonymous said...

OK, here we go - play the race card as soon as you possibly can. Lame and so tired. Did Kerry lose because he was White? Against George Bush - who had a sub 40% popularity rating and was presiding over the worst year of the Iraq war!? No - he lost because this is still a centrist nation.

The "racist America" Obama argument just fall so flat. He won primaries Iowa, New Hampshire, Wyoming, and in all those other "white" states didn't he? (I defy you to find a black person in Iowa who isn't just passing through). If he loses it's because he's the MOST liberal member of the US Senate running with the third most liberal member of the senate - by voting record - as his VP. This is what the democrats fail to get - and it's why Ned Lamont - remember him? - a far left-leaning liberal, couldn't win an election against Joe "I'm a back-up Republican" Lieberman in one of the bluest states in the Nation. Because even most of the Democrats in this nation aren't far left, and a plurality of the population of the country's voters still don't want a far left government running the country. And that's why Obama will lose. Period.
