Part-Time Wal-Mart Employee Trampled To Death
Jdimytai Damour, 34, a part-time Wal-Mart security guard was trampled to death yesterday morning by a teeming crowd, which had gathered outside of a Wal-Mart awaiting its 5 a.m. opening. The shoppers proceeded to step over the dying man in order to start shopping, eager to get the best deals on Black Friday, America's unofficial shopping holiday.

I read this yesterday and was stupefied. It's almost impossibly funny and impossibly sad that consumerism has reach this point where saving a few dollars tramps the lives of people. It's something I would expect in a fiction but not in real life. I guess it was Black Friday.

I don't think that people are poking fun at the death of the man, but rather at the fact that greedy consumers in our country are reaching such a low point where they cannot wait till a store opens for them to hoard up on a billion things. This incident is so bizarre that it defies comprehension and inflames indignation towards a people that can only think of Big Day Sales and Great Deals on stuff upon stuff upon stuff. Consumerism = America's Favorite Past-time.

people are more desperate than ever to spend as little money as possible (wallmart while on sale)because of the fucking economy. so sad

You might not find many people who'll admit it, but I think it practically is.
Apparently that mall is known for being quite "ghetto" and being the scene of constant brawls and arrests.

I think we should avoid taking the easy way out by saying "that's walmart customers for you" and "only on Long Island." We are a part of this too, even if we aren't the ones banging down the doors at a few minutes to five. This was a sickening event, but we can use it as an opportunity to be more mindful of ourselves and our values. I know I'm getting preachy, but it's worth some serious thought.
