Admissions h4x0rs Facebook to seduce pre-frosh

Breaking Facebook's Terms of Service by creating an account under the name Stewart Reid House, Admissions has started a Facebook Group called WesAdmits 2013, a place for pre-frosh to gather and talk about how cool and debauched they are.

Just kidding, pre-frosh. We love you. And I'd love you even more if you weren't a constant reminder of how close I am to graduation.

How exactly does this violate the Facebook TOS?

Justin said...

Under "User Conduct," it reads "you agree not to use the Service or the Site to:

- register for more than one User account, register for a User account on behalf of an individual other than yourself, or register for a User account on behalf of any group or entity;

- impersonate any person or entity, or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent yourself, your age or your affiliation with any person or entity;"

best part: Anything posted to this page is governed by and must meet the Wesleyan Student Code of Non-Academic Conduct.

thats so fucking lame. the prefrosh group was a great way to connect to other prefrosh without having any regulation as to what could be said. that blows. i hope facebook deletes their account

How exactly would this stop prefrosh from making their own group? Its pretty straightforward this is for students who haven't been admitted or even applied yet.

Anonymous said...

uh, 7:33, the first line of the group's description is "congratulations on your acceptance to wes!"

Anonymous said...

...and it's called wesAdmits...

2013??? fucking christ

Not to be a pain in the ass, but if "Stewart Reid House" violates the TOS, then don't "WesComputer Store" and "Wesleying Blog" do so as well?

Wesleying on Facebook

the deans had spoken with a bunch of current students about this, and they also spoke to parents and prefrosh about if they thought this was a good idea. it was approved.

Anonymous said...

yeah, i mean technically those things shouldn't exist either. (Wesleying and compstore)

Anonymous said...

Which deans? Which students? Did you bother to consult the WSA?

Anonymous said...

Deans: Leslie Barry and Stephanie Lee, among others.

Students: many of those that work in the admissions office, among others.

I don't know if the WSA was 'consulted', I'm not in charge of this. But I don't see any reason for the WSA to have been spoken to: The facebook isn't for current students, its for prefrosh.

i agree, the WSA has little to do with this, but wesleyan officially going against the TOS of a website like facebook? tsk tsk. they even made an email for it. whack. so whack.

there are already student-created 2013 admitted groups. I guess this gives accepted students another avenue to communicate not only with each other, but maybe with admissions? guess joining both the admissions-related and student-created groups brings the best of both worlds.

We recently created a Facebook Page for Wesleying (you know, so you can become a "fan" of Wesleying instead of being Wesleying's "friend"). Eventually, this will replace our Facebook profile, Wesleying Blog, which was made back before groups and nonhuman entities could create a presence on Facebook.

Just like the WesAdmits 2013 group, the Wesleying Blog account does violate Facebook's TOS. But we're not violating the TOS while acting as official representatives of the University. :-P

At any rate, become a fan of Wesleying!

I am very amused by the fact that one of the related groups for the WesAdmits group is called "Enough with the Poking, Lets Just Have Sex"

So if ED applications were up 40%, did admissions increase the percentage they admit in ED, or did they defer a lot more people?

Anonymous said...

I heard they deferred a lot of people to ED II so they can see how many apps they get RD...

I joined and there are these kids friending literally everyone in the group. It's actually kind of irritating.

Also, people should leave WesAdmits and join the unsanctioned group for admitted students. I mean, who wants PSA to monitor their facebook pages for the next four years?

i'm in both the wesadmits group and the student created "wesleyan university class of 13" group, i think we should all do that.

also, i am irritated by those people as well. at least i already know who i don't want to be friends with next year.

Anonymous said...

The Photographic Society of America?

Anonymous said...

@10:06 - While I agree that it is slightly irritating, I think they're just being friendly. I wouldn't go judging them based on what they're doing on Facebook.

GTFO Prefrosh. You aren't here yet.
Get off Wesleying.

Anonymous said...

GTFO 11:01, we want prefrosh! we lurrve prefrosh!

Anonymous said...

Someone should tell Mamoun that he is violating the TOS as well. I'm sure he'll care.

Anonymous said...

People need to chill. Seriously. They're not requiring anyone to join, it's just an option that they've provided, and they specifically say they don't monitor your profile, only what you post in the group, unlike lots of other colleges.

And I agree, the people who are friending everyone seem nice and are probably just trying to be friendly. How are people so closed-minded before they even matriculate?

-'13 (who has been reading Wesleying for 6 months , and 11:01 can't stop me!)

i like you 9:37.

I work in the office. Typical of the morons who work there (particularly Steph Lee)...why would you put the disclaimer about the code of conduct and then not link to it? Do they think recent admits have just have it memorized?

Why do I work in that office? SO. MUCH. BULLSHIT.

Anonymous said...

what was that infamous post from last year? something about wine parties maybe?

Anonymous said...

Then don't work there.

Anonymous said...

11;54, it's in the text of the post. just click on how cool and "debauched" they are

bullshit in the admissions office? is it that bad?
