Wesleyan is smokin'

Over at Roth on Wesleyan, our beloved University President reports:

One of the most exciting bits of news we had over break was the extraordinary number of applications we’ve received for next year. More than 10,000 students have asked for a place in the class of 2013, a surge of well over 20% from last year. As many of you know, our Early Decision Applications were up over 30%, and we’ve now learned than most of our peer institutions are not seeing anything like this spike in interest. It’s a lot more work for the tireless group in the Admissions Office, but the fact that more and more people are hearing about the great things going on at Wesleyan is very good news indeed.
So, umm, that's pretty cool. But why the spike of interest in Wesleyan this year? Was it the Obama commencement? Mainstream musical alum success? A widespread revelation that "Ivy" status doesn't mean a better education? (Yeah, right.) A nationwide shift toward more liberal discourse, making Wes not seem as crazy-radical and more awesome-radical? Whatever it is, keep it up, Wes.

Homosexual?

totes mgmt

Anonymous said...

guess the numbers make sense if Wes administration was spending resources actively recruiting while others were logicall re-trenching

6:15- for shizz

i seriously doubt it's all from mgmt
maybe just a better admissions tour spiel this year? who knows

or maybe this year's hs seniors are more liberal/political because of the election and stuff

It's not mgmt. Ever.

only people from wesleyan care that mgmt went to wesleyan

Anonymous said...

10:54, true, but not entirely. even some of us who went to wesleyan don't care.

I think maybe some from Obama, and some from Wes being in the media more in general... but I dont know what else... especially since Amherst, Middlebury, etc. all saw application decreases this year

I think the tour guide program has a lot to do with it. I mean, we rock. and have been doing a lot of new stuff this year.

My guess is Wesleying has a lot to do with it. When I was applying to college, knowing what is going on EVERY DAY at a college would have been a huge way for me to know there are things at the college I'd like to do. No ivy even has anything close. If you're scared of what college is or not knowing where you might fit in, this blog is definitely a gold mine.

It is DEFINITELY because Obama came here. The current President of the United States and easily the most famous person of 2008 was our speaker at Commencement. You need to check yourself if you think otherwise.

Anonymous said...

Did *you* pick schools based on their commencement speakers? Were you even aware of their commencement speakers?

I'm more inclined to believe it was an admissions tour thing.

Anonymous said...

5:18, no, actually, admissions were going up well before last year. It stands out more this year because the spike and the lack of spike at other schools.

obviously a combination of Obama and MGMT. If you can't accept that it's because of MGMT get over it. If it strengthens the student body then I'm all for it. We got a bunch of press because of President Obama and MGMT combined this year.

I'd say it's a combination of HS seniors becoming more left-oriented due to the election, and the realization that a liberal arts education can amount to something. Also, Wesleyan has an advantage over other liberal arts institutions (Amherst, Williams, etc.) in that its Science department is just as adept as its PoliSci/English departments.

Definitely not MGMT. Seriously, no one cares about MGMT outside of Wesleyan. I mean, it's kind of cool, but it definitely isn't incentive. Vampire Weekend hit it big, but no one's applying to Columbia for it.

omg, i'm so tired of people acting like m-g-m-t is the be-all, end-all to every contemporary problem. as has been said before, no one outside of this school (and even then, it's a vocal minority) cares about mgmt and their wes connection. get over yourselves.

Wait... 10,000??? That can't be right... I mean how may do we accept? Like 1200?? That would be less than a 15 % acceptance rate...

Anonymous said...

by the time w/l is completed we will have accepted close to 2000 for an acceptance rate of ~25%. figure a lot of them will be Ivy overlaps. Wesleyan has become Yale, Brown and Columbia's biggest LAC overlap.

I'm sure Obama had a huge amount to do with it, but can you also say "need blind admission policy"? The economy sucks, people. They see that policy and think "hey, they'll pay my tuition".

I think it's pretty plainly 90% Obama. Sure, no one picks schools based on commencement speakers, but out of new england (and maybe even in new england, I wouldn't know) no one's really heard of us. Just getting our name out there was important.

I agree that it's probably because this year's senior class is very politically/liberally-oriented due to the election, and Wes fits that bill. MGMT never played any part in my college decision... haha

-Also '13 (sorry to be taking over this thread)

it's not the economy- amherst and williams' financial aid kicks our ass.

I really don't think it's MGMT. '13 here and I hadn't heard of them until I was accepted. Definitely college tour for me. Awesome. Best one of out of like 10 I've been to. (And I'm from the South)

Makes it suck for kids who would like to get in in the future. I'm super worried... which is ridiculous because I am worried way too far in a advance.

Obama commencement put Wes on my radar. That was really awesome.

And it's such a good school but it still feels... accessible?

Yeah, don't care about MGMT. It is cool, but don't care.
