Wesleyan students mugged twice in same day

Walk in groups and travel along well-lit paths, they say. And be aware of your surroundings, since two Wesleyan students have been mugged in the past 24 hours.

... on Monday 3/31/08 at approximately 10:45 PM a male student was near Dennison Terrace when he was approached by two individuals. As they passed him one of the individuals punched him knocking him to the ground. The individuals then demanded his backpack which they took and fled toward High St. The student did not suffer any injuries.

The first suspect was described as an African-American male, approximately 6' 1" black hooded sweatshirt, large build, the second suspect was described as a Caucasian or Hispanic male, approximately 5' 9" with a tan or gold hooded sweatshirt.

The method and description of the suspects sounds creepily similar to the mugging that occurred not 24 hours earlier:

... on Monday 3/31/08 at approximately 1:15 AM a male student was walking on William St. near High St. when he was approached by two individuals. As they passed him one of the individuals punched him knocking him to the ground. The individual then held him to the ground and demanded his wallet. The student told the individual that his wallet was in his backpack which they took after they dumped out books from it. The individuals then fled north on High St. The student received minor injuries and declined medical assistance.

The first suspect was described as an African-American male, approximately 5’ 10”, white sweatshirt, large build, in his mid 20’s, the second suspect was described as a Caucasian male, approximately 5’ 6” with a black hooded sweatshirt, thin build, in his mid 20’s.

Bike Thefts

There have been (as PSafe let us know a week ago) several bikes stolen on campus. However, after seeing a PSafe officer looking around the Butt C bike rack earlier today and taking another look at the e-mail, I have a correction to make. It is not the case that only bikes left unlocked are being stolen. Mine was one of the ones stolen, and I'm quite certain it was locked up. When mine went missing, I looked around a little bit and found another lock--very similar to mine--that was sawed or otherwise broken through. (Both of these were the metal cord type of bike lock.)

If you have a bike (especially one in the Butts), make sure you have a good enough lock on it! Getting your bike stolen sucks, and the fewer people it happens to, the better.
