Magic Eye Tetris

Just in case the puppycam isn't fulfilling your procrastination needs, I bring you: Magic Eye Tetris. Believe it or not, there are actually two popular Magic Eye Tetris games online, separately programmed:

I much prefer the hidden-3d.com version of the game. It's more accurate to the real Tetris rules, and the stereogram pattern is much easier on the eyes. However, if you're feeling particularly adventurous, try the lutanho.net version - which has a board that's only 8, not 10, blocks wide. Anyway, good luck with it. I find it's pretty hard to stay in focus consistently... I haven't been able to get above a score of about 10,000.

And if you've had enough of Magic Eye Tetris, there's always the Magic Eye Snake game...

The 1st Annual Great Wesleyan Caper

Jesse Bordwin '10 thinks you don't have enough to do besides midterms. Or that you don't have enough fun. Something to that effect. To solve this problem, Jesse has create the 1st Annual Great Wesleyan Caper. What in the Usdan is this, you ask? According to the Caper website (thegreatwesleyancaper.weebly.com):

"One way to describe the GWC is as a giant scavenger hunt murder mystery extravaganza. It's very involved, and those who are playing will be forced to use their skills to follow a long trail of clues to solve the kidnapping. It will take days, weeks even, to get to the bottom of the mystery.

What kidnapping? What mystery?
You haven't heard? Oh, it's terrible! Last night, somewhere between the hours of 2:00 am and 4:00 am, my roommate Gabriel Fries was abducted. I was fast asleep and only when I woke up to go to class did I discover the blood on the sheets that was the only trace of my poor friend. That and the one clue we have that might set us on the trail to his recovery. I loved Gabe dearly, and I'd like to have him back. And that's why I'm putting you, the best minds of Wesleyan University, on the case. And oh yes! There's a nice reward involved.

...There will be a trail of 40 clues that will lead to the location of Gabe's whereabouts. Along the way, you will figure out who took him and why. The first person/team to get to the last clue will save Gabe Fries, and win the jackpot...Once everyone is registered, I will give each team Clue #1 as the first step to solving the 1st Annual Great Wesleyan Caper, on Wednesday, October the 17th, the first day of classes after Fall Break. From there on out, it is an all-out race to be the first team to reach the final clue."

Just think of it as Humans vs. Humans-- all the campus craziness, with no zombie carnage (bummer, right?). Of course, there are plenty of other rules/regulations/guidelines that will help to make this crazy idea into a reality. So if you're interested, visit the website to read up and register. Happy hunting!

EDIT: Re: Anonymous Comments-- A disclaimer on the site notes, "[D]on't be surprised if you see the real Gabe Fries walking around Campus, going to class, or making films... he was just generous enough to lend his person to the Caper, and if you see him around, it doesn't mean you've solved the mystery."

File Under: Way Better Than "Kings"

These days you've got to look hard among the silly, fake petition groups (Revolt against donuts!) and silly, useless applications (Grow your own nosehair!) to find anything worthwhile on Facebook. Once in awhile, though, you can run across a diamond in the rough, and this month's jewel is: Horcruxes (the drinking game). Developed by some devoted--and clearly ingenius-- Harry Potter fans at SUNY Plattsburgh, the game (which has a facebook group devoted to it of the same name) has simple rules obviously derived from Kings. But way better. According to the group's site:

"The new drinking game for Harry Potter fans everywhere:

THE RULES:
This game is played with two die. Sit in a circle and have the youngest person roll first.
2- The Twins: you either have to tell a joke or do a dare agreed upon by the rest of the circle in honor of Fred & George Weasley.
3- The Trio: you're Harry. Pick a Ron and a Hermione to drink with.
4- The Dungeons: last person with their hands to the floor drinks
5- Quidditch: last person with their hands to the ceiling drinks
6- The Slytherin: pick one other person in the circle. they must drink
7- The End of Year Feast: everyone drinks
8- The Marauders Map: everyone lists a Harry Potter character until one is repeated or someone can't think of one. this person drinks (go clockwise.)
9- The Hogwarts Express: the person that rolls starts drinking, then the next person starts drinking, and so on. you can not stop drinking until the person before you stops drinking. (go clockwise)
10- The Filch: you have to roll the dice and multiply whatever you roll by 3. if you roll doubles you've gotten out of detention and don't have to drink.
11- The Dark Lord: you have gained a Horcrux.
12- Dumbledore's Army: you have lost a Horcrux.

You begin the game with 1 Horcrux.
If you get to 7 you get to drink the Elixer of Life which will be in the middle of the circle.
Every time you make someone drink, you gain a Horcrux. When you roll an 12, you dump a drink into the middle (the Elixer).
If you're down to zero Horcruxes you're out of the game."

The next time you're wishing you were in Charms instead of Chemistry, quit taking notes and plan out a Horcruxes party instead. Happy Geek-ing!

Flashmute

If you're addicted to Winterbells but can't stand that bleedin' cute background music anymore, fear not. Flashmute is a tiny app that lives in your system tray that allows you to mute your browser without having to mute your entire computer. And making that little bunny hop from bell to bell to the Pixies is a different experience entirely. Windows only, unforch.
