We Are What You Think, what you do, and who you do

The success of YouTube has generated lots of spin-offs, each with its own agenda, including  The Hub: a "YouTube for human rights," GodTube: "broadcast him," and lots and lots of free porn (probably the agenda with the most entertainment value, so props).

The new kid on this block is BigThink, a YouTube for ideas, whose motto is "We are what you think". It even has financial backing from ex-Harvard President Lawrence Summers. Eventually the Big Thinkers want to create a facebook-like social networking feature for serious intellectual types.

It's a nice idea. Really, I applaud their efforts. I think it has a lot of potential. This could be a great way to fight holiday brain-rot, except... it's BORING (you might not think so, but then again you're probably just pretending-- the emperor has no clothes!). I'm willing to cut BigThink some slack because it's brand spankin' new, but I hope they'll come around eventually.

Case in point: I just watched composer John Harbison talk for two minutes about composition. I have an active interest in the subject-- I'm a music major and I compose. I've heard of Harbison, studied him in class, and listened to his works, some of which I don't hate. I understood everything he said and can place it within a larger historical dialogue. Even so, I was bored to tears.
The problem? The entire website is all talk. "Experts" sit in front of a white background and talk. talk. talk. Harbison is a composer-- a video of a composer talking about composing while giving no concrete examples and no soundbytes to demonstrate his points is useless, no matter how articulate he is (and in fact Harbison is not all that articulate in the video).

Also, I believe Big Think's dullness is directly related to its puritanical streak: I knew the big guys behind BigThink had the wrong idea when I read Summers' one worry about the site: "Let say someone puts up a porn video next to my macroeconomic speech?"

Obviously Summers overlooked the fact that the best ideas put porn and economics together. Seriously, ever read D.H. Lawrence?

Since Wesleyan is the pioneer institution for the intellectualization of porn (those of you not in the know google COL289: Pornography), I say we generate a porn dialogue on BigThink (preferably with more ambitious cinematography than the videos currently on there)-- do whatever you want, but keep it intellectual, guys.
BigThink, you're welcome.

oh and p.s. speaking of D.H, the entire text of Lady Chatterly's Lover is availabe here

Film Hall Double Feature

Film Hall will be putting on a Double Feature tonight, showing Electric Dragon 80000V and Deep Throat:

Electric Dragon 80000V follows Dragon Eye Morrison, as he gets struck by lightening as a child, granting him electric superpowers, bursts of rage, and awakens his inner dragon. The only thing that keeps him calm is his electric guitar. Elsewhere in Tokyo, Thunder Buddha reigns as an electronic vigilante with 2000000 volts of electricity running through him. Naturally, they duke it out. Rock.
and
A girl needs to untangle her tingler, which instead of being in the normal spot between the legs is 9 inches down her throat. We all know what comes next. It's the greatest and most influential film of all time to feature large amounts of things going into people's mouths and grossed 50,000 times its production cost.
So it's an angry electric guitar playing superhero fighting a vigilante named Thunder Buddha, and the world's most famous porn film. And it's free.

Date: Friday, April 13
Time: 8-10pm
Place: Film Hall (Nic 6 basment)

Another Porn Course Media Mention

Hey, when was the last time we had that now fucking infamous porn course again? I know, let's keep talking about our naked dorm and that one porn class offered 5 years ago because surely that's all we're good for.

Le sigh: the image is unrelated to the article. I just thought it was funny. Get over it.

Mosex

From Wired: "Taste Networking for Better Porn"

Daniel Gluck, executive director of the Museum of Sex (NSFW) in New York, sympathizes with the situation as well -- so much so, he's trying to do something about it.

The result is the fledgling MoSex Index (NSFW), an attempt to combine the best of social content with "taste networking."

"Our social content engine is similar to Digg or Reddit, where members can post content and others can rate it. Based on content thresholds, who is doing the rating, karma and reputation, links make it to the homepage," Daniel says.

"But -- and I think this is an extremely important aspect of the project -- we've also incorporated a collaborative filtering element. On other sites, you rate or (don't) rate; we have a degree of rating based on a 7-point Likert scale that adds weight to your like or dislike. We take that intelligence and form 'taste profiles,' which combine to form 'taste networks.' When people in your taste network find content they like, that content gets recommended to you."

If that's not doing it for you, here's a list of porn sites posters on ACBIII recommended:

Some more fodder for your "collection"

If you ever watch the Home Shopping Network and think, "You know what would make this better? Hardcore pornography!," you should check this out. Obviously the link isn't safe for work, so don't check it if you're still at your internship or something.

What's best is that the "catalog" is downloadable...And some of the clothes are actually pretty cute. The porn ain't bad, either.
