F*ck Brown

From the school whose very name is the color of shit comes a sad, sad attempt at denigrating Wesleyan, courtesy of Brown's Daily Jolt. Fast forward to 2:06—you won't be missing much, anyway.

Might this video have been a failed attempt at winning Brown's first pick for housing? Might it have been an attempt to assert the superiority of shitty Ivy League song and dance over the hard questions a Wesleyan education forces us to ask? What do we make of this?

P.S. Thanks, johnwesley.

i get that they're not making a joke about wesleyan; they're making a joke about the obama speech video shit. ...right?

I get that theme from the beginning of the video, but where's the "Fuck Wesleyan" part come in?

Anonymous said...

I think they think their dean complimented a Wesleyan education and insinuated that a Brown education was less enlightened by being more enlightening. or something. It's probably just a misunderstanding.

At any rate I don't think "F*ck Wesleyan" is a good response. Also I don't see how this video could possibly win votes in a housing lottery.

I don't think this is directed at Wesleyan at all. They're making fun of their Dean, who went to Wesleyan, and her speech, in which she... kind of... says fuck Wesleyan. (Personally I think she was referring to how hard classes can be when they wake you up to how fucked up the world is, that does make them dark, like she says.) Or else they're making fun of Wesleyan for producing said Dean. But in terms of insulting Wesleyan as a school... I'm just not seeing it

Anonymous said...

no, 8:07, she said the classes were hard, not that they were dark. They left you "in the dark," as in she didn't understand them. Really, she should have done her reading.

Not that I ever do...

I'd just like to say thank god Wesleying isn't ad-supported

I applied to Brown, but did not get in. So I went to Wesleyan instead. I love it here, but come on, we simply aren't as good. Let it go.

I agree Brown is better than us

I LOVE WESLEYAN, AND I LOVE THIS SONG. FUCK WESLEYAN! FUCK WESLEYAN!

anons 8:45 and 10:41 are clearly Brown students posting on Wesleying. Freaks.
The video is stupid and I'm disappointed I watched the whole thing.

wtf? wait, is there some kind of rivalry between us and brown? that doesnt make sense, thats like a rivalry between oxford and UCLA

Xiaoxi said...

ouch. oxford and UCLA? Then in that case oxford felt irrationally threatened and took a cheap shot at UCLA.

Anonymous said...

this is really a cheap shot

check this

i recognized this tool from the video and some facebook group. lame.

haha. an asian screech.

my friend at brown who sent this to me says that it's directed against that dean, who everyone hates.

I don't really see how there's room for confusion here: Brown students were trying to win their housing competition by trashing Wesleyan via a Brown dean who clearly didn't put much effort into her early education, or is unprincipled enough to realize that such a speech will make her popular.

That said, I can't decide if it really pleases me that Brown is as insecure as we are, or if I am annoyed at myself for feeling pleased about that...

In conclusion, at least our blog isn't ugly as all hell.

man fuck brown, tools....

This is hilarious. Justin, I don't think you needed to set the tone of taking it seriously. It makes us look ridiculous and pathetic (the color of shit? really?). Folks who would rather be somewhere other than Wesleyan, I'm sorry. Brown folks, I like you :)

This is clearly just hilarious. Way to overreact.

It would be funnier if any of them could carry a note. Oh well. Then again, to be fair, Brown doesn't have the Music Department that Wesleyan does.

Jeff said...

Isn't Brown that ivy league school that no one takes seriously and didn't even have need-blind admissions until like 2 years ago? I guess all those rich kids who can afford to go there just had nothing better to do with their time...

I don't think the mutual antagonism is particularly helpful to anyone. There's really nothing to be gained by simplisticly bashing either university in the way that's been done here.

Hate hate hate, Brown Brown Brown! Wesleyan mad! Argh! Video make fun against us! We make insult against them! School we go to prove who we are as people! Argh!

Anonymous said...

True that, 10:15. True that.

I think the saddest part of this is all the Brown kids who read a Wesleyan blog and then make fun of us.

Anonymous said...

haha, ridiculous. but really, the girl needs to learn how to see in key.

I spoke to a Brown kid (my sister) and have the following info:

She hadn't seen the video until I sent it to her and she and her suitemates don't get the video any more than we do. They also don't dislike Wesleyan or consider there to be any sort of rivalry or competition or anything but similarities and relative geographic proximity.

Apparently some of the kids in the vid are none-too-loved. The guy found by Anon February 28, 2008 12:47 AM "was in this a capella group and then left it to 'pursue his own thing' because he's an asshole and full of himself." The girl who can't stay in key is a "total diva" but apparently usually does a better job singing.

Also, apparently the housing lottery thing is a farce because the people who win are generally seniors who will be living off-campus anyway.

I think its fair to say that the people in this video are weird outliers. I've personally always considered Brown to be like a cousin of Wesleyan.

Dear Wesleyan students and whoever this message may pertain,

As one of the creators of this film I believe I can speak for everyone else involved and say with confidence that our intention was not to offend any students at Wesleyan, or anyone else for that matter. The video is meant to be a pseudo-spoof on “Yes We Can” that consciously begins to enter the realm of ridiculousness over the course of the film. With that said, we are sorry if anyone was offended by the movie. I can assure you that wasn’t our aim.

Best Wishes,

Rad Center Productions

I think all Wes students need to stop with the "Brown reject"/"Brown is better" thing. It's really annoying because this is a great school and you're all caught up in the stupid "Ivy" title.
I've met Brown students..and other Ivy students as well, and I can't say that we're their inferiors.

Some of us are happy to be here and proud of the fact that we got in. Some of us are challenged by the academics and think this is a great school.

So stop with the self-loathing. Brown isn't hating on us, you are hating on us. And it's getting old.

You create the campus atmosphere. If you try hard enough, this will become a "less than Brown" school.

I agree with 7:33. And remember, there are plenty of students, including ones who were thinking about and had at least a shot at Brown, who applied to Wes early because they decided it was the rockinest school around.

Brown is cool. Wes is cool. They have a lot of things in common, but they also have a lot of differances. Peace and love for all?

Anonymous said...

yeah it's cool. i mean i guess i just wish that since they clearly had the time to insult us that they would take the time to sync the video and audio at the end. they just have no idea what it's like to go to a school of hard knocks and life lessons like wesleyan, no idea what it's like for our parents to pay more in tuition than they do. no idea at all.

Jenn said...

rad productions: thanks for clearing up that you're not insulting wesleyan. now whenever i'm bubbling over with pride for my school I'm going to start singing "Fuck Wesleyan" incessantly. i might try to hit the notes a little better than the asian diva, though. i like my swear words to sound classy.

The Dean's entire speech is on the Brown Daily Herald site. You have to read the whole speech to realize she loved her time and education at Wesleyan. What she hated was the discomfort from realizing how much knowledge there is out there, given so much freedom with your education. She later goes on to say how she realized how much she loved this. Or something like that. You need to read her whole speech.

This video is making fun of Dean Bergeron for making such a weirdly negative speech about another school (although according to the poster above me, she came around to liking Wes in the end). That's all it is.

Anonymous said...

Uhhh... to the original blogger... this isn't an attack on Wesleyan. The video is a satire on the Barack Obama video and they needed a silly catch phrase that they could extract out of the woman's speech. Her speech worked well for this because taken out of context and put into this format, it sounds ridiculous, which was their intent.

So basically, calm down and watch the video with a little context.
