You mean, if you feel like it. This is the second time I've sent you guys an email about an event and you have not posted it. (It wouldn't have been a 'double post' for the event). How do you determine what you do and what you do not put up? The event is today and I sent the request a few days ago. I rely on Wesleying to get the word out about my event to people who would otherwise not know about it, and when it's not posted, the event (and thus the student group) suffers because of it. I thought you guys were here for real students and real student life. I'm disappointed.
i have to agree with 12:22. i sent an email on thursday about an event on sunday (today), and it was never posted. what really makes me mad is that stuff about a&p not being open 24 hours a day gets posted, but actual events on campus don't.
i love wesleying so much -- please don't break my heart.
A lot of our old frequent Wesleying posters are either (a) really busy getting ready to launch the new Wesleying site or (b) currently seniors and extremely busy (ex. Justin, me).
I'm sorry that your events haven't been getting posted, but do realize that the original intention of the site was never to be simply an events calendar - the university already has an official one of those, and no one ever checks it. This is a blog, and pretty much none of the other student blogs out there (check the USNews competition) don't even bother with event posts. I think it's great that we have them, but do understand how difficult it is to keep up to date with them. Posting events is extremely time-consuming, and as Wesleying has become more popular, the quantity of event posting requests we've received has increased immensely. This leads to "OMG there are way too many posts in the inbox to even think about dealing with" syndrome, which I've often fallen prey to.
The other major problem is that people keep sending us events on Thursday for the weekend. This leads to thirty e-mails on Thursday night that we're expected to post immediately. But the weekend is the weekend for us, too, and contributors are far less likely to be at their computers Thursday-Saturday. So if you have a weekend post, PLEASE send it by Tuesday if you realistically want us to get it up.
Long story short is, we need more contributors. But being a contributor can feel pretty unappealing and like an annoying responsibility when there's no appreciation for doing it, and often unsubstantiated anger ("arrgh you got the date wrong even though that's what I sent in my e-mail to you! screw you for not realizing and fixing it!"). We want to launch a recruiting drive for more contributors, but because we're about to move over to Wordpress, we are holding off on that since it's silly to get the new contributors used to Blogger and then make them learn a whole new posting system over again.
I hope this transparency helps. We're not unaware of the problem that lately there are too many events for the small number of contributors to post.
here are some guidelines to follow that will help your event get posted in a timely fashion:
1) Include name AND DATE of the event in the subject. When we see that there's a Feb. 22 post in the inbox, and it's Feb 20, we're more likely to post it. If you don't include the date in the subject, there's a good chance it'll get buried in the inbox and no one will get to it.
2) Don't send weekend posts in on Thursday. No one is at their computers on the weekend. Like, I'm sorry, but there's a really high chance no one will get to it.
3) Include a picture.
4) Keep your event information short, to-the-point, and easily postable. Using ridiculous formatting, all-caps, five paragraphs of unnecessary information, etc. adds significantly to the time it takes to post the event, and decreases the chances that anyone will get to it.
Hope those tips help a little. I'm doing the best job as I can while still living my life, writing my senior essay, working in a research lab, and keeping up with classes. Wesleying contributors are just students with busy lives who volunteer to do this and get nothing out of it other than the satisfaction of seeing a more connected campus. It takes fifteen minutes to format even the most basic event post.
Also: people I don't know have been approaching me (somewhat angrily) in real life to ask me to post things while I'm in the middle of doing something else. Please don't do this. It just makes me feel frustrated with Wesleying and resentful of being a part of it. I love Wesleying, I really do, but I don't think I'm along in saying that it's become a negative experience for me. Please bear with us and treat us like real people.
A couple of more tips for getting event posted:
- Really do include a text blurb about the event. Don't just include a link to a facebook event, or a jpg/doc/pdf poster.
- If you really do want a posterlike thing posted, send us an image file (like .jpg or .gif). Not .pdf or .doc.
One more tip:
if it's far in advance of the event itself (awesome! send that in!) include the date of the event in the subject, and then in the body, also tell us what date you would like it posted. Blogger software lets us post in advance but schedule the post to be posted some day in the future.
This is also helpful when you consider that we don't do repeat posts. If an event/deadline is far off, and you don't want people to forget about it, you might want to specify to us that you want it posted on such-and-such date closer to the event/deadline.
