Second Stage presents Songs for a New World, directed and choreographed by Elizabeth Trammell '10, music directed by Steph Ross '09.

A six-person cast will take you through a musical journey, portraying an array of characters from Christopher Columbus to the wife of Santa Claus, to more modern stories, such as a woman searching for love in wealth and a young man hoping that basketball will be his ticket out of the ghetto. Ultimately, the show teaches us about ourselves and our journeys throughout the stories and characters of today, accompanied by the music of a new world.

ASHPET: An Appalachian Cinderella Story

ASHPET: An Appalachian Cinderella Story, will be performed at South Church this weekend. There are only two shows, and no tickets, so show up early to get a seat. The show is free, but donations will be accepted and will go toward fixing the broken organ at South Church.

Musophobia!

This weekend, Second Stage proudly presents Musophobia. Writer and Director Alli Rock '10 writes:

It is a certain famous theme park's official position that there are no actors inside the giant cartoon costumes that roam around the park. And as they are so real, of course, they could never ever break character. Never. Ever.

Which makes for a problem, in 1984, when these actors go on strike. It's not easy being a panda, a princess or a mermaid when you're caught between an administrative fairy and a labor organizer.

Want to see the man behind the curtain? It's simple, just close your eyes really, really tight, concentrate really, really hard, and journey to the land of the Imagi-Nation.

Second Stage Loves You
In case you didn't know...Second Stage is a student-run, volunteer organization overseeing Wesleyan's student theater. We help produce dance and theater shows that are entirely designed, directed, teched and performed by Wesleyan students. All undergraduates are welcome to apply for Second Stage sponsorship of a show, using either the '92 Theater or one of the various alternate spaces.

Put on a show through Second Stage!
Second Stage is now accepting show applications for the Fall semester! If you are planning a performance for the fall and would like to be sponsored by Second Stage, be sure to fill out an application. We sponsor all kinds of performances--plays, musicals, dance, all of the above, none of the above. You can find the applications on the call board in the Theater Studios, or download them from our website: www.2ndstage.org

Applications are due Tuesday, May 6th by 4:00 pm. Turn them in to Second Stage's mailbox in the Theater Department Office, or give them to a Second Stage member!

Once upon a time, a young unassuming lad accidentally became the king of a small European nation. It isn't long before he finds himself lost in a sea of booze, strippers, kitten-punching homicidal assistants, and plenty of plain ol' sex. Can he lose his virginity? Will he ever finally swim with dolphins? What would his mother think?

Weekly staff responsibilities include:
- Attending Monday meetings
- Setting up risers on Wednesday afternoons
- House managing performances
- Striking shows Saturday evenings

(Second Stage presents "Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad" by Arthur Kopit, this weekend at Beckham Hall in Fayerweather. Come see the ridiculous and unsettling story of family, love, death, and a growing fear of the outside world.)

P.S. Today I fed rubber bands to my mother's plants and she said I was so good at it that I could be a professional. A professional, of...of, um, rubber ba...hm.

(Combining dark comedy with absurdism, "Oh Dad, Poor Dad..." parodies the extremes of societal distrust and miscommunication. Leave the children at home...this play gets a little sexually explicit.)

Miss[(ed) it]

Sometimes people say fabulously witty things, coining insightful new aphorisms at the drop of a hat that will go down in the annals of lexicography as the words that forever changed the course of modern intellectual thought. Sometimes people just say really weird stuff at Usdan. Come to Miss[(ed) It] and see some of Wesleyan's most shining examples of the latter, savagely decontexualized and lovingly reanimated into a Frankenstein's monster of theatrical exploration that WON'T be tragically misunderstood and chased out of town by a vicious mob. At least, we're hoping it won't.
