Time Magazine has compiled an hilarious list of strange sporting competitions. I can't decide if I like the human vs. horse marathon or the wife-carrying more. Basically they're all awesome, with YouTube videos to boot.

Lane Kirshe '10 (right) and Dan Hulyk '11 (below) were featured in a Boston Globe article about promising collegiate athletes in New England:
Junior Lane Kirshe of Franklin, a two-way threat in the offensive backfield, is competing for a starting role with the Wesleyan University football team..."Lane played quite a bit for us as the season progressed last year, and he wound up splitting starting time at tailback. He really looked good on a couple of screen passes and he's a solid blocker with no holes in his game," said Wesleyan coach Frank Hauser.
Kirshe's teammates include sophomore Dan Hulyk, a linebacker and former Milford High captain who played offensive and defensive line and linebacker in high school.
"Dan's a tough kid who worked hard and went through a learning experience as a freshman," Hauser said. "We're looking for him to step up because he showed a good run to the football at inside linebacker and he's adapting to pass coverages."
Boston Globe: Going the distance
Bill Rodgers '70 , part of the inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame class, is the subject of an article in this week's Sports Illustrated as part of its annual "Where Are They Now?" feature. Rodgers, whose claim to fame is being the first man to win both the New York and Boston marathons in the same year (a feat he accomplished in 1978 and 1979; he's still the only person to do so twice), was diagnosed with prostate cancer last December but has made a full recovery. The article focuses primarily on his racing career; interestingly, though, there's no mention of Wes.

The Boston Globe profiles Boston's all-star roller derby team, the Boston Massacre, part of an all-female league with women from all walks of life meeting on weekends to kick ass on skates. Wesleyan grad student Elizabeth Jeffrey, a.k.a. "Etta Mames", competing alongside teammates with aliases like "EZ Bake Shovin'", "Sugar Hits", and "Jennasaurus Wrecks", is among the skaters profiled:Etta Mames "After the singer Etta James, not after the soy bean edamame" loves that roller derby gives her excuses: excuses to wear fringe, excuses to knock people over ("I'm a blocker; I just love hitting people."), and excuses to look cool by brushing off nasty-looking injuries.
Boston Globe: Four on the floor
"People at work were really concerned about [my cuts], and I have sprained both of my knees, so I was on crutches for a while last fall. And everyone's like, 'Is that that rollerblading that you do?' And I'm like, 'Kind of.' It could've been a lot worse, but people do tend to wonder what's going on with me."
She started playing almost two years ago, when she found herself out of college and bored in front of the television all day. "I was at a party, and I was like, 'I need to do something!' " A friend of a friend who competed in roller derby introduced her to the sport. "It just clicked into place, and now everything else that I fit into my life has to fit around roller derby."

The boys' lax team has made the NESCAC semi-finals. They have won 10 straight games and are going to play Williams on Saturday at 3:00 PM to make it to the championship game.That game, as well, will be broadcast on JumboCast.
The last scheduled Broomball event of the year is going down tonight, 10-11:30pm on the rink at Freeman. First timers are welcome and as always participants must wear clean shoes with no salt on the soles. You know what happens when you put salt on ice.

Youtube will apparently be hosting the commercials after the game, so if you're like me and don't really care about either the Colts or the Bears, but love watching the commercials (because you're hopelessly obsessed with consumer culture? Or just love animated animals selling you beer...) you no longer have to sit through the game to watch them!

Broomball, the game made for gym class enthusiasts everywhere, is back.
It's going down TONIGHT at the ice rink at Freeman. All you need to bring with your fine self are a pair of sneakers that (this is important) do not have salt from the roads on them as, obviously, salt would fuck up the ice and then there'd be hell to pay.
