Lisa Drennan '09, NESCAC Player of the Year

This year's NESCAC women's volleyball player of the year is Lisa Drennan '09, for the second time in her college volleyball career, and Ellie Healy '10 was also named to the all-NESCAC squad as a second-team choice.

Over her four years at Wesleyan, Drennan amassed 1,865 kills in 379 sets. She ranks first all time at Wesleyan in average kills (4.92), second all-time in total kills, and fourth all time with a .298 hitting efficiency. She also averaged 2.73 digs, 0.68 blocks and 0.46 aces per set during her career.

...Healy currently ranks second in the conference in average assists with 10.18 per set, a figure that ranks her 23rd nationally in Division III. She led the conference a year ago with an 11.35 figure but sets have been reduced from 30 points to 25 points for a victory this season, accounting for the lower average.

Wesleyan closed out the year with a 21-7 mark and an 8-2 NESCAC record, which earned the second seed in the NESCAC tournament for the team. A win over Amherst in the regular-season finale gave the Cardinals a share of this year's Little Three title. It was the team's fourth straight winning season, and ninth in the last 10 seasons.
Congratulations, Lisa and Ellie.

Dethroned

Wes volleyball beat defending NESCAC champ Amherst 3-1 today--its second win over the Jeffs in as many meetings this season--to clinch the #2 seed in the NESCAC Championship, which begins next weekend. Wes also clinched a share of the Little Three title for the first time since 1992, when we won it outright, with the win. Wes takes on Bowdoin--which has lost its last 18 matches against the Cards--at Tufts on Friday. Whoo.

GO WES!

Two Wes athletics-related announcements:

First, we're looking for people to do the commentary for the webcasts of the four home football games (Sept. 27 vs. Hamilton; Oct. 18 vs. Amherst; Oct. 25 vs. Bowdoin; and Nov. 8 vs. Trinity). We want one person to do the play-by-play and one to do color commentary. The pay is $25 per game. If you interested, contact Brian Katten '79, our Sports Information Director (bkatten@wes).

Also, the first athletics contest of the school year takes place tomorrow (Friday) night when the volleyball team hosts Williams. They somehow managed to beat us twice last season, so trust me when I say Wes is out for revenge this year. The match starts at 8:00 PM in Silloway Gym (at Freeman). Go Wes.

Volleyball vs. Trinity

Shamelessly copied from facebook, but hear me out:

Wesleyan Girl's Volleyball are playing the Trinity Cocks Bantams for a conference match. Come support their sexy asses (in spandex).

THE HAMMER shirts will be available for $7. Limited supply.

Also, if you cannot come to the game, it will be webcasted at 7:30 at www.wesleyan.edu/athletics/volleyball.

If you haven't heard (and apparently rumor IS spreading), Wesleyan volleyball games are AWESOME! The team is really good, and it draws a ton of fans, including many in costume. It has all the best aspects of a pep rally, but with an athletic contest instead of BS. You should probably go.

Date: Friday, 10/5
Time: 7:30 pm
Venue: Freeman Athletic Center (go in the front door and walk straight back past the hockey rink)

p.s. Sets/games are to 30, except for the 5th, which is to 15. The player wearing a different colored shirt is the libero, and she plays only in the back row, among other things I don't understand.
