M-Town Focus Group on Drug Issues

WesWell reports that the Middletown Substance Abuse Action Council is looking to hold a focus group with a group of students from Wes and Middlesex Community College about drug issues:

This is more about personal concerns, as they describe below:

We are looking for a diverse group to participate in a confidential hour long discussion on their experience with drug use on campus and in the Middletown community – among their peers, use that may be impacting their family, concerns that they have about the future. The group will be lead by Kent Alexander, a professional facilitator.

There will also be 5 Middlesex Community College students in the group so we thought that the MCSAAC office (located at 393 Main Street) would be a nice in-between location to meet at one evening. As an incentive we’ll have pizza dinner for participants and a raffle of a gift certificate.

If you are interested in participating, please email your name and phone number to lcurrie@wesleyan.edu by Monday, September 29. I will share your contact info with MCSAAC and one of their staff members will then contact participants with scheduling details.

Please note: This is NOT connected to any Wesleyan initiatives. The University will not receive information back from these sessions.

Let's Talk About Drugs!

Peer Health Advocate Elena Logvinenko '09 sends in some info about a sweet forum going on tomorrow. If you're considering trying any drugs and want to know the info (how to keep safe while taking them, etc.), it sounds like this is the event for you:

This will be a very informal event, led by the Peer Health Advocates. We'll be discussing drugs, alcohol, harm reduction, and the social climate at Wesleyan. We expect this to be a group conversation, not a lecture by the PHAs. You can ask or talk about drugs, what they can do, how not to hurt yourself while taking them, how to help your friends if they have a bad experience, and the fact that really, you don't have to take any drugs or drink if you don't want to. WesWell's mission is to equip you with accurate and useful information that can be used in your personal decision-making.
When: Friday (tomorrow), 2:30 pm
Where: the WesWell solarium, the 2nd floor of the health center

(ps. there will be snacks!)

Go here for more information about this year's Sexual Health Expo, as well as past years' events.

Come and discuss Wesleyan culture around academics—the good and the bad (and the occasionally ugly). And eat free Typhoon dinner!

Join in on the second installment of WesWELL's "Perfectibility Series with Dr. Davis Smith". Biochem Professor Manju Hingorani, and Freshman class dean Noel Garrett will be joining the Peer Health Advocates and you to discuss the reasons and consequences that Wesleyan students (and college students in general) seem to believe that attaining "Perfect Student-hood" is possible. Study drugs, campus culture, time management skills etc. will be possible topics of conversation.

Where: Exley room 58

You know you use those handy bags of assorted condoms, or maybe you use the pill? Time to give some feedback on the wesleyan birth control campaign! What's your favorite condom, wesleying? Mine are those beyond seven/kimonos... anyway.

WesWELL, the Office of Health Education wants to know what kinds of safer sex supplies we should be offering. We have an online survey up through December 1st, so please help us out!

The survey is here.

(p.s. Wesleyan students only, please, with apologies to all the non-Wes Wesleying readers.)

Northern Shaolin Kungfu Class

... taught by DAVID MOENCH 09!!!
For those of you who don't know David, OR don't know why you should take this class, here's the deal.

David Moench is like Chuck Norris, only more badass. My freshman year, during Orientation week, when everyone was going on lame walking tours of campus, David went around with a grappling hook and scaled all the university buildings. David also plays guitar and makes the best pancakes this side of the Yangtze river. In fact, David can probably drop kick Chuck Norris while playing guitar and making pancake batter all at the same time. No joke.

NOW, David is offering to share his knowledge and take disciples. You simply can't turn this down.

Recap:
What: Northern Shaolin Kunfu class, through WesWell
Who: DAVID MOENCH 09!!!
