WSA election results are in!

WSA elections closed last night at midnight, and the results are in.

At-Large Representatives

Interestingly, Giant Joint's perennial candidacy got only 83 votes. Barack Obama got six votes, and students who took the elections a little less seriously wrote in such gems as Turd Sandwich and "Bon Appétit wasn't going to fuck up Summerfields, but then they got high, la da da da da da da da."

Students who took the elections a bit more seriously wrote in such pleas as, "These candidates haven't written anything meaningful in their blurbs. Put a little less effort into sounding cute and a little more thought into what it means to be a WSA rep and I might vote for you," and, "A candidate who actually takes this election seriously." Check out the full results for more.

The five new At-Large Representatives are listed below, in bold. Candidates and notable write-ins are included.

  • Alexandra San Roman (252)
  • Amy Blume (245)
  • Cesar Medina (213)
  • Siriwan Luangthanahiran (188)
  • Joanna K. Seirup (174)
  • Jennifer Spero (138)
  • Giant Joint (83)
  • Barack Obama (6)
2012 Class Representatives

The freshman class voted, too, and were able to choose eight representatives. Giant Joint got only three votes. WTF, freshmen? Learn your Wesleyan history. Also, "Give me my dog!" got one vote. Huh?

  • Benjamin Firke (108)
  • Adam Ilowite (105)
  • Adam Fishman (104)

Another semester, another WSA election

Elections for the various WSA positions closed last night at midnight. Unfortunately, Giant Joint was again denied the opportunity to represent the students of Wesleyan. Nevertheless, here are the results, as recorded on the WSA website. Candidates in boldface type are the winners; other candidates who garnered significant numbers of votes have been included, as well.

It took me forever to write and format this entry!

Student Budget Committee

  1. Gianna Palmer (448)
  2. Jared Keller (317)
  3. Charles Kurose (312)
  4. Anna Chang (211)
  5. Johanne Lin (208)
  6. Vignatha Reddy (167)
  7. Adam Paulsen (152)
  8. Alejandro Alvarado (141)
  9. Khan Kikkawa (110)
  10. Anna Wiener (63)
  11. Giant Joint* (54)
The results would indicate that Gianna Palmer '10 has established a formidable popularity in her role as Chair of the SBC. Plus, she occasionally blogs on Wesleying. How cool is that? I say: very cool.

Outside of Anna Wiener '09 and Giant Joint '4:20, no write-in candidates garnered any significant number of votes. However, both "sex" and Dan Quayle got one vote each.

At-Large representatives
  1. Allison Quantz (338)
  2. Karl Grindal (230)
  3. Benedict Bernstein (216)
  4. Kathy Stavis (209)
  5. Robert Chris Goy (199)
  6. Jessie Schiewe (194)
  7. Michelle Garcia (189)
  8. Erik Underwood (143)
  9. Mytheos Holt (134)
  10. Ryan Brill (124)
  11. Halim Farouk Rizk (86)
  12. Giant Joint* (77)
In the At-Large election results we see a much wider spread of votes, since eleven candidates were listed on the ballot. Voters must've found someone to like among them, since Giant Joint '4:20 was the only write-in candidate to get a double-digit voting tally. Various websites, servers on the Wesleyan network, Kentucky Fried Chicken, sports, penis sizes, and "sex" all were rewarded with single votes.

Freshman representatives
  1. Jen Liebschutz (139)
  2. Elise Rosenthal (119)
  3. Fludiona Naka (101)
  4. Giant Joint* (9)
Freshmen, I love you, but I fear that you may have taken the WSA elections a bit too seriously. One of the only somewhat-creative write-in votes I saw was for Stephen Colbert. But it's OK; I still believe in you.

The All-Campus survey results are also available at the WSA website. Students using the write-in functionality of the election actually made sense here: the write-in results show a lot of interesting opinions that hopefully will be incorporated into future WSA and administration policies.

Plus, it would appear that everyone's favorite food service provider, Bon Appétit Management Company, has reason to be happy. 268 voters feel that dining options have improved; 213 think they've stayed the same, and only 94 say that dining options have deteriorated since the start of the school year. If this was a referendum on Bon Appétit's performance (though I would be reluctant to grant it such significance), it looks like they're doing pretty good in the minds of students.

On the other hand, as Anonymous points out in the comments, upperclassmen seem to think that Davenport and Mocon were better than current campus dining options. 223 preferred the old eating establishments; 115 found Usdan to be preferable. 77 saw little or no difference between the facilities.

* Vote counts for Giant Joint have been compiled and reflect not just the exact spelling Giant Joint, but word combinations similar to Giant Joint, possible misspellings, and other write-in votes where the intent appeared to be voting for Giant Joint.
