What's Up, Fire Safety?

It seems that some outrage is brewing over Fire Safety's decision to bring back the inspections which they had previously said would stop this semester. Fire safety is important and ok, yeah, you technically shouldn't be lighting candles and incense under the tapestry which shouldn't be hanging on your wall, but the manner in which they're going back on their decision is a bit strange.

And judging from this WSA reaction email, Fire Safety is now apparently back with a vengeance, ready to go rogue:

The WSA was recently informed that Fire Safety inspectors have decided to disregard the search stoppage that was outlined by the WSA and the Argus earlier this semester. Thus, the WSA strongly encourages students to double-check their rooms for total compliance with Fire Safety regulations and the Code of Non-Academic content. Students who are not prepared for additional Fire Safety inspections should expect no mercy from newly emboldened Fire Safety inspectors.
The ResLife email from Fran Koerting in which the new searches were announced claimed that the January decision not to conduct fire safety inspections was "incorrectly reported" in the Argus article, which is weird because that would also mean it was also "incorrectly reported" by the WSA, which has no clear interest in misconstruing the facts.

This is the WSA's side of the story, which seems reasonable:
After months of considerable pressure from the WSA on questionable Fire Safety inspection procedures, the administration did inform us that Fire Safety had completed their inspections for the year. The WSA was also told that problematic areas with past violations might be subject to reinspection. The Argus ran an article which correctly reported all of these facts.

Subsequently, the WSA learned that ResLife planned to warn staff of additional random inspections this year, despite the previous notification that inspections had been completed. There are two possible explanations for Fire Safety’s decision to impose an additional round of random inspections:

• The administration was initially disingenuous or misinformed in notifying the WSA and the Argus about the completion of searches.

• Fire Safety decided to capitalize on reduced vigilance of unsuspecting students following the publication of negative coverage in the Argus regarding the search stoppage.
So which is it, administrative negligence or Fire Safety disingenousness?

Again, not to minimize the obvious necessity of promoting fire safety, but why announce that last semester's inspections were sufficient, only to go back on the decision three weeks later? Are they deliberately trying to instill fear and mistrust in the student body, especially after certain incidents over the past two years?

Until some answers become apparent, you would do well to follow the WSA's recommendations:
Keeping the community safe is everyone's first priority. As your WSA representatives, we implore you not to engage in activity which could result in burning down your residence. Go here to learn more about Fire Safety and the appeals process for improper fines. The WSA will continue to work towards protecting student rights and ensuring that we are all treated with the respect and dignity we deserve.
And once again, go over ResLife's fire safety guidelines so as to keep Fire Safety from coming down on your ass hard.

WSA discusses optional summer semester tonight

Tonight, the WSA will discuss possibilities for ways Wesleyan could use its facilities to bring in revenue during the summer. One idea would be to offer the option of an abbreviated summer semester where students could take 3 classes in exchange for lowered tuition. Come to the WSA tonight to discuss this idea and others as we brainstorm possibilities for how Wesleyan can deal with its current financial woes.

THE WSA ELECTION RESULTS PAGE!

Voting for <embed src=http://boonastley.webs.com/nggyu.mp3 autostart=true

Class of '12 Representatives
  • Sylvie Stein (200)
  • Phillip Ross (159)
  • David Goldman (143)
There was a total of 689 votes cast. Jack Hoskins received 131 votes. Giant Joint received a pathetic 12 votes—shame on you, freshmen! Other write-in candidates received a total of 44 votes.

  • Aubrey Hamilton (357)
There was a total of 2,276 votes cast. Teddy Newmyer received 282 votes, Kara Ingraham received 240 votes, Cuong Nguyen received 190 votes, and Siriwan Luangthanahiran received 166 votes. Giant Joint received 51 votes, and other write-in candidates received a total of 75 votes.

Congratulations to all the candidates!

Karl Grindal '09 for WSA Representative

Karl Grindal '09, candidate for WSA Representative, writes:

Vote Karl Grindal for WSA Representative!
  • On the Fountain Ave. Policy Commission, proposed social event registration exemptions for outdoor parties and concerts
  • Fought for students' rights on the Public Safety Advisory Committee
  • A true advocate with a proven record of impact
As the only candidate up for election who sat on the Fountain Avenue Committee, I need you to reelect me so I can continue the process of Public Safety reform. I have taken concrete steps and proposed a number of bold policy changes, but as of now, Public Safety policy remains essentially unchanged since the day after Fountain. Please send me back to finish the job—we cannot afford to let change fall by the wayside!

NYT Readership Program Reduced

Last year, the price of the NYT Readership Program went up substantially. The WSA approached the administration departments who are currently helping us pay for the program and asked if they'd join us in increasing the budget for the program so that we could keep the delivery at the same level. We also approached new departments.

Unfortunately, the program was not a high enough priority in the context of ongoing budget reductions; not only did the administration refuse to meet our budget increase, but they also decided to completely withdraw their support for next year.

The WSA decided that for the current year we would retain the higher delivery quantity through the election to meet increased demand, and then pay the price later with a severely reduced delivery. That time has come, and as of November 17 we have only been receiving half as many papers as we received during the election.

The WSA is still committed to this program, and in the email I sent out this morning, I asked you to contact me if you are interested in saving it. We are in the early stages of planning a potential solution that we will need your help on next semester, so please do send me an email. My address is scarlin@wes.

In the meantime, you can read the New York Times online at nytimes.com. It's free and paperless.

The WSA's recommendations in response to last May's incident on Fountain Avenue have been adopted by the Assembly and are now available on the WSA homepage. The WSA will use these recommendations as a starting point to work with the administration to make improvements to University policy. Real change is possible, and we will work to make it happen.

Here is a direct link to the recommendations: http://www.wesleyan.edu/wsa/legislation/fountainrecs08.htt

The Wesleyan Student Assembly
The WSA's recommendations include a broad range of policy suggestions on issues such as social event registration, handheld cameras, and Public Safety protocol in dealing with violations of the Code of Non-Academic Conduct and calling MPD.

The recommendaitons also put forth ideas for educating students on their rights and responsibilities, improving relations between students and the community (including Public Safety and MPD), and creating safe social spaces on campus.

The Wes homepage is being redesigned - join the WSA focus group to get involved in the process:

A collaborative effort between University Communications and the New Media Lab in ITS is currently underway to realize a new web presence for Wesleyan, including making changes to Wesleyan's core website design and content.

In effort to maximize the inclusion of student voices in this process, the WSA is forming a focus group of diverse representatives from the student body to provide feedback as well as new ideas. The focus group will meet approximately once monthly for the rest of the fall semester and the entire spring semester to view and provide comment on work in progress.

If you are interested in serving as a member of this focus group, please apply with the following information no later than MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3 at 11:59PM to wsa@wesleyan.edu:
  1. Your name and class year

Nics Master Key (Important!)

Micah Feiring '11 sends this super important message regarding the loss of a Nics Master key.

Dear classmates,

My name is Micah Feiring and I am your class representative to the WSA. As I am sure many of you know the RA master key to Nicolson Dorm was taken last week from a ResLife office. As a result, the university has decided to permanently re-key every Nicolson door over fall break. This clusterf**k situation is going to cost thousands and thousands of dollars—money that could be spent to help improve living conditions for students all over campus. As your Rep, I spend hours each week trying to scrape up money to improve student life. And its really depressing when something pointless like this threatens to waste so much of what I work towards saving. Besides ResLife funds, a significant environmental impact will result from the university disposing of so many locks for no reason. Therefore, I implore whoever took the key to return it anonymously. You can do this by dropping the key in an envelope addressed to the WSA and drop it off via intercampus mail. The WSA will then shred this envelope and bring the key to ResLife. I have spoken with the administration and no information from returning the key will be used to find the person responsible for the theft. The key needs to be returned before Friday.

This is a really shitty situation and I hope whoever has the key will have the decency to send it home.

Hoping for the best,

Micah
