For the Nostalgic New Yorker

If you miss home, as many of us do this time of year, check out the New York Times' "I LEGO NYC" blog by Christoph Neimann.
Even if you're not a native New Yorker, hopefully you can find something that will bring a little cheer. My favorites are the cream cheese lego, the plastic bag stuck in the tree and the dog poop, all images that define my neighborhood.

Red Wire Black Wire in NYC

Red Wire Black Wire, currently composed of Doug Walters '08, Zac Meyer '08, David Snydacker '09, Jonathan Sirlin '08, and Jocelyn Bonadio '07, will be in New York over winter break, and so will you, probably.

The first show is a headliner tonight (Friday) at Lit Lounge:

What better way to celebrate a re-location of the greatest, most brilliant, most creative minds of our generation than to go to a loud, fun rock show with a band of ALL Wesleyan graduates (and one '09)?! None. There is no better way.

We had our EP release show at this same venue just three or four weeks ago and we can't wait to rock the shit out of it once more.
Date: Friday, December 19
Time: 8 pm, RWBW at 10:30
Place: Lit Lounge, $6

Also check out the band’s new website, as well as some free downloads at RCRD LBL with an evocative write-up of the available tracks:
We've had our eyes on these Wesleyan grads for a while but this time they bring us a poppier, hook-heavy track, "Locked Out." Who knew being getting fucked up and locked out of your casa could be so inspiring. But evidently it can be, with Red Wire Black Wire spit out cutting lyrics, heavy drums and breezy shoe-gaze guitar in the background.

Meanwhile, we've had their decidedly darker "Compass" on repeat these days - it's fuzzed-out bass and twirling synths draw us in while references to "kill the old and pervert the youth" ensures the band never needs to worry about being classified as young and cute.

Wes Represents NYC

Two of our Wesleyan Alumns, Majora Carter '88 and Jeffrey Maier '06, were featured in New York Magazine's special 40th Anniversary Issue as having an important impact on NYC's history in the past 40 years.

Majora was nominated by Princeton University Professor Joshua Guild as the 10th most inflential New Yorker in the past 40 years (ranking with the likes of Barbara Walters, Spike Lee, and Mayor Bloomberg) for creating her organization Sustainable South Bronx and greening the neighborhood.

Jeffrey was featured as the 12 year-old-kid who tipped Derek Jeter's fly ball into the stands in 1996, which ultimately led to the Yankees entering the World Series and winning after an 18 year slump. While the article cites that Maier currently lives in (enemy borders) Boston, he's still remembered as a major "headliner".

With half of Wesleyan living in NYC, it's about time we get recognized!

Can't Get to Work Today?

Y'all kids in the city know what I'm talking about:
ARRGGGHHHH
When I walked into the E86 Street station this morning, my first thought was "wow, it's like Foss Hill on 4-20!" Only... Not. I saw one woman push her way into the train by yanking another woman out by the hair. WTF, New York?

The Daguerreotype Starring Half of Wesleyan...

Katey Rich '06 sends in this heads up for those of yous stationed for the summer in the New York area:

Students past and present, is making its New York theater debut this weekend. Their new play, "Daguerreotype," was written by Stephen Aubrey '06 and is directed by Jess Chayes '07. Edward Bauer '08, Hayley Stokar '06, and Zach LeClair '10 star.

"Daguerreotype" tells the story of Mathew Brady, a photographer from the Civil War era who became famous for his portraits of the great men of his time (Abraham Lincoln, George Custer, Ulysses S. Grant and many others) as well as the most graphic battleground images the country had ever seen. In "Daguerreotype," Mathew is at the twilight of his life, and he must choose between the life he has built and the legacy he wants to leave behind. Haunted by the ghosts of the past and the spirit of his dying, catatonic wife Juliette, Mathew must revisit his past and consider his future, as a forgotten legend from another era.

"Daguerreotype" is only one part of the Story Project's American Summer Theater Experience-- a festival with TASTE! There will also be readings of new plays-- including those by Anna Moench '06, David Haan '06, and Chris Kaminstein '05-- and performances by Wesleyan's own sketch comedy group Lunchbox. It's all happening at the Abingdon Theater in Manhattan, at 312 West 36th street.

The festival starts Thursday, August 2 and runs through Saturday, August 11 (with no shows on Monday the 6th).

Complete showtimes and dates are available here.

You can buy tickets for Daguerreotype here.
  • Tickets for The Daguerreotype: $12 for students
  • Tickets for Lunchbox (available at door): $5
  • Tickets for the readings: Free!
There will be scores of Wesleyan students at all the shows, not to mention general New York theatergoers, who are always worth knowing. Come support some of your fellow students and alums (a full list of company members can be found here) and see historical, documentary theater that we absolutely promise is not boring or stuffy.

WesNYC Music: MGMT, Bottle Up and Go, Spirit Marines

In the New York area? No plans tomorrow? Well, it's the luckiest day of the year (7/7/07), so you shouldn't just sit on your ass. Why don't you take a trip to the Flamboyan Theatre (107 Suffolk, NYC) and see MGMT (formerly known as The Management)? Their new album Oracular Spectacular will be out this September, and word on the street is that it's really good.

If you head over to Bottle Up and Go's myspace, you will also see that they have several New York shows coming up including a show with The Spirit Marines at TRASH BAR (256 Grand, Brooklyn) this Monday, July 9th. I plan to be there, and hopefully I will see you. Hopefully, I will be drunk and ready to tell you all about post-Wesleyan life.

Graduate from Wesleyan, live in a cubicle?

Like so many Wesleyan students who move to NYC following graduation, Nina Rubin '01 was met with the challenge of finding affordable housing. Read about her unique solution to New York's housing crunch here. And you thought GRS was bad.
