WSA elections closed tonight at midnight. Here are the results:

At-Large Representatives

There was a total of 1,888 votes cast. Gianna Palmer received 256 votes, Kathy Stavis received 179 votes, and Charlotte Hastings received 176 votes. Giant Joint received 59 votes, and other write-in candidates received a total of 85 votes.

There was a total of 689 votes cast. Jack Hoskins received 131 votes. Giant Joint received a pathetic 12 votes—shame on you, freshmen! Other write-in candidates received a total of 44 votes.

Student Budget Committee (SBC) Representatives

• Aubrey Hamilton (357)

There was a total of 2,276 votes cast. Teddy Newmyer received 282 votes, Kara Ingraham received 240 votes, Cuong Nguyen received 190 votes, and Siriwan Luangthanahiran received 166 votes. Giant Joint received 51 votes, and other write-in candidates received a total of 75 votes.

Had just 3% more of the total votes cast gone to Teddy Newmyer, Psi U would've had a majority on the SBC; nevertheless, 43% of next semester's SBC will be composed of Psi U brothers.

WSA elections will be upon us soon

The WSA Elections Committee writes:

Just coming back from study abroad? New to Wesleyan and want to bring change to the University? Now's your chance.

WSA elections will be held the week of December 1 for 3 Frosh Class Representative seats, 4 At-Large seats for sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and 3 seats allocated directly to the SBC that all students are eligible for.

Anyone can run. It's easy—pick up a copy of the petition at the WSA office in Usdan, and attain 25 signatures from the classes you will represent. Petitions are due back to the WSA office by 5 PM this Thursday, November 20.

In case you're worried McCain might take Pennsylvania...

At least it's not likely to be this bad.

The results are from an actual poll taken in October 2006, before anyone outside of Hawaii, Illinois, or DC had even heard of Barack Obama.

WSA election results are in!

WSA elections closed last night at midnight, and the results are in.

At-Large Representatives

Interestingly, Giant Joint's perennial candidacy got only 83 votes. Barack Obama got six votes, and students who took the elections a little less seriously wrote in such gems as Turd Sandwich and "Bon Appétit wasn't going to fuck up Summerfields, but then they got high, la da da da da da da da."

Students who took the elections a bit more seriously wrote in such pleas as, "These candidates haven't written anything meaningful in their blurbs. Put a little less effort into sounding cute and a little more thought into what it means to be a WSA rep and I might vote for you," and, "A candidate who actually takes this election seriously." WSA elections closed last night at midnight. Here are the results:

Class of '09 Representatives

There were a total of 603 votes cast. Travis Helterline received 61 votes, Giant Joint received 37 votes, and other write-in candidates received a total of 57 votes.

UPDATE: Via Elections Coordinator Izaak Orlansky '08:

Due to the unusual nature of the tie, the Elections Committee has decided to award both Vickie and Jeff seats. In order to account for the extra seat, we will have one less at-large seat available in the fall election.

Chris Goy '10 sends in a campaign statement for the WSA election:

WAIT ... HE'S ACTUALLY RUNNING AGAIN?

Fellow 09'ers ... lend me your ears. I wouldn't bother you if it weren't pretty important to me. Due to WSA rules, I have to run again just to be on the WSA in the fall. I would very much like your support for a number of reasons. Here they are:

1) You've got to give me some props ... at least I didn't crawl in a hole, never to return. I still care a lot about the WSA and want to make good on the things I promised in my presidential campaign.

2) I think I've done a great job on the SBC helping to make it more welcoming, accessible and equitable. Most of the positive changes you have seen this year are the result of, Gianna Palmer '10, who chaired the SBC this year and did a bang up job if I do say so myself.

3) This will be my 3rd year on the WSA. Just some quick examples of how I operate as a WSA Member:

• Although my responsibilities on the WSA have nothing to do with Usdan at all, when I noticed most of the lights in Usdan were staying on all night, I got them turned off in areas that weren't being cleaned.
• Coming Soon: $10 increments at the Usdan ATM!!! Hell yes.
• Also look forward to a polling place right on the Wesleyan Campus next fall.

Vickie Cheng '10 for junior class representative

Vickie Cheng '10 is running for WSA Junior Class Representative:

I am Vickie, a Math-Econ & Music double major currently studying abroad in Regensburg, Germany.

Brought up in a country with a conservative culture, however being open-minded to ideas and thoughts, I came all the way from Hong Kong to Wesleyan. In the further pursuit of foreign culture and music, I came to study abroad in Germany. With my unique background and broad experience, I believe I will bring a different perspective to issues discussed in WSA. During my time in Wes, I have taken initiatives from forming new singing ensemble "The Mixolydians" to setting up mentorship program. I promise during my time as your class representative, I will bring in new ideas to WSA and make your life in Wesleyan a better one.

Becky Weiss for Class of '10 representative

Becky Weiss '10 is running for Junior Class representative in this week's elections. She writes:

As chair of the WSA’s Finance & Facilities Committee, I have striven to make real changes at Wesleyan. In the past year I have successfully advocated for the addition of a kitchen to the Butterfields and card access for 200 Church. I fought tirelessly for lower food prices as well as a to-go option in the Marketplace. I worked with Bon Appetit to use more sustainable food packaging, to extend late night hours, and to expand options in the Usdan Café.

There is still a lot of work to be done. Woodframes are in desperate want of interior and exterior upgrading and 156 High needs card access. Despite our progress, the Usdan Café can still be a better facility. Dining in general needs improvement, and as always I will continue to be open to your feedback. If re-elected, I will strive to make these changes and many more.

Patrick Lee for Senior Class Representative

Patrick Lee '09 sends us his campaign statement for WSA Class of '09 Representative:

This year, I have heard students complain about innumerable poor-decisions made by the University on constructions, dining, ResLife (boo), chalking, the censor on Zonker Harris day, the discontinuation of Korean language program next year…etc. These poor decisions the University made are the result of the lack of fierce student voices heard by the administration.

I assure you that aggressive protests can make a difference, as proven by the administration’s decision to re-offer the Korean language program after insistent appeals by the students.

Over the years, Wesleyan has been losing its own color and becoming more and more like liberal arts colleges in rural Massachusetts. As a senior class representative, I will present myself to voice the concerns of the senior class with an uncompromising attitude, so that we as well as all the students that are to follow us can enjoy a little bit of the real Wes.

Chris Goy '09: "Wesleyan Has a Choice"

Chris Goy ’09 responds to Wesleying’s call for a statement pertaining to the WSA Presidential race, elections for which are open this week:

Hey Wesleyan,

I know a lot of you are recovering from last weekend, either physically or academically, and the last thing you need is to be bombarded by our two campaigns asking you to vote for us. I'd like to take a hot second and address the issue of leadership experience. The following are some of the highlights of what I have accomplished over the past three years. This is not to self-aggrandize but only to directly counter what seems to be the sole reason people are considering voting for my opponent.

Relevant details regarding my student leadership on campus include:

• President of Wesleyan Democrats, 1 Year
• 2 Years of WSA Experience
• Most years serving Wesleyan & only rising Senior candidate.
• SBC Member, Approved over 200 student group requests.
• Led collaborative effort with President Roth, the CT Secretary of State, and student leaders to provide a new polling place on campus this November.
• 1 of 3 students asked to find a new dining contractor to replace Aramark.
• Organized numerous widely-attended campus events.
• Additional Memberships: Usdan Advisory Committee, Finances and Facilities, Undergraduate Residential Life, Behavioral Health, Government Majors and the Middletown Democratic Town Council.

Many of the accomplishments we cite as WSA members are the product of committee action and thus, many people are typically involved in decisions. It is important for voters to hold both campaigns accountable for what is said. Voters need to learn how to be able to seek out and analyze clear distinctions between fluff and substance.

Why I Am Different...

Unlike others, when vitally important student issues, like new security cameras, come to my attention, I would not want to bargain until I had successfully engaged the student body. No real engagement occurred as students were left in the dark. This was truly the fault of every WSA member, including Mike Pernick and myself. The committee my opponent was chair was, however, most intimately involved in approving camera policies and negotiating with the administration on this issue. A WSA President should not need to learn how to effectively engage students. It should already be second nature.

The truth...

I have served in a number of leadership roles outside of the WSA. My opponent admitted that he has not.

I have offered my Senior Year to the student body, and my opponent is a sophomore with time left to grow.

Most WSA members could easily compile impressive lists such as those of my opponent. We deserve better.
