WSA election results are in!

WSA elections closed last night at midnight, and the results are in.

At-Large Representatives

Interestingly, Giant Joint's perennial candidacy got only 83 votes. Barack Obama got six votes, and students who took the elections a little less seriously wrote in such gems as Turd Sandwich and "Bon Appétit wasn't going to fuck up Summerfields, but then they got high, la da da da da da da da."

Students who took the elections a bit more seriously wrote in such pleas as, "These candidates haven't written anything meaningful in their blurbs. Put a little less effort into sounding cute and a little more thought into what it means to be a WSA rep and I might vote for you," and, "A candidate who actually takes this election seriously." Check out the full results for more.

The five new At-Large Representatives are listed below, in bold. Candidates and notable write-ins are included.

  • Alexandra San Roman (252)
  • Amy Blume (245)
  • Cesar Medina (213)
  • Siriwan Luangthanahiran (188)
  • Joanna K. Seirup (174)
  • Jennifer Spero (138)
  • Giant Joint (83)
  • Barack Obama (6)
2012 Class Representatives

The freshman class voted, too, and were able to choose eight representatives. Giant Joint got only three votes. WTF, freshmen? Learn your Wesleyan history. Also, "Give me my dog!" got one vote. Huh?

Class of '09 Representatives

  • Chris Goy (109)
  • Justin LaSelva (105)
  • Candace Buckner (88)
  • Patrick Lee (79)
  • Chris Choi (67)
There were a total of 603 votes cast. Travis Helterline received 61 votes, Giant Joint received 37 votes, and other write-in candidates received a total of 57 votes.

Class of '10 Representatives
  • Becky Weiss (157)
  • Liana Woskie (132)
  • Morgan-Marie McCray (109)
  • Michelle Garcia (81)
  • Vickie Wing Yee Cheng (79)

There were a total of 836 votes cast. Giant Joint received 49 votes, Mytheos Holt received 41 votes, and other write-in candidates received a total of 109 votes.

Stein and Cheng are tied with 79 votes each; I'm awaiting word from the WSA on what happens now, and will update this when I get a response.

UPDATE: Via Elections Coordinator Izaak Orlansky '08:
Due to the unusual nature of the tie, the Elections Committee has decided to award both Vickie and Jeff seats. In order to account for the extra seat, we will have one less at-large seat available in the fall election.
Class of '11 Representatives
  • Micah Feiring (181)
  • David Markowitz (162)
  • Bradley Spahn (122)
  • Samantha Pop (109)
  • Jaynice Del Rosario (98)
There were a total of 963 votes cast. Thana-Ashley Charles received 92 votes, Siriwan Luangthanahiran received 85 votes, Giant Joint received 39 votes, and other write-in candidates received a total of 75 votes.

Congratulations to all the candidates!

Someone makes a plea for Giant Joint

Someone from a non-Wesleyan e-mail address feels that in the sake of fairness, we should include Giant Joint's candidate statement. Though ze is not officially running this year, there seems to be some movement for a write-in campaign:

Dear Blogosphere,

In the interest of providing equal media coverage for all WSA candidates, I would like to remind students of a candidate who has a proven ability to change the way people think - Giant Joint.

Giant Joint was supposed to write up a statement for the Argus and submit an application to the WSA in order to be considered an official candidate, but then he got high. (La da da da da da La). He thus urges all students, regardless of class, to vote for him as a write-in candidate by Friday (that's "Giant Joint," not "giant Joint," or "gIaNt jOINt.")

Let's make next year unforgettable (in the short-term). Vote Giant Joint!

Serious Business: Marijuana for President

The Wesleyan Student Assembly (WSA), our student government organization, is serious business.

So serious, in fact, that a giant smiling joint scored dozens of votes as a write-in candidate in last semester's election.

Unfortunately, Giant Joint's campaign ended in a puff of smoke.

Thanks to the creativity of Bex Allen '08 (Facebook profile, Argus interview), last semester's WSA elections had a drop of humor in what otherwise was a sea of apathy (and CSS majors).

I first saw Giant Joint on 4/20, and had yet to find out that much more than a humorous student was hidden below the costume. Soon, posters advertising Giant Joint's campaign appeared on campus, bearing the slogan, "Every day is 4/20 with Giant Joint!" It turned into a phenomenon, including a dinnertime campaign stop at MoCon. By the time the voting was finished, Giant Joint had dozens of votes, but unfortunately, not enough to win a seat on the WSA.

Marijuana running for student government: just a little insight into the WSA.
