A poetry reading hosted by The Hangman’s Lime, Wesleyan’s all poetry magazine, because we love reading poetry, but love hearing it more! Bring your friends, your ears, and your mouths (for the free limes, of course!).

The Writing Program and Writing Hall Present Fire the Generator: A New Writing Series featuring Yolanda Wisher and Mark Palacio.

Hailing from Germantown, North Wales, Brooklyn, and Belize, the duo of poet Yolanda Wisher and doublebassist Mark Palacio creates an intimate conversation between spoken word and jazz.

Slam poet and activist coming to Wes

Slam poet and activist Andrea Gibson, winner of the first annual Women of the World Poetry Slam, is coming to Wesleyan! Her work deals with issues of war, race, sexuality, gender, art, sexual assault, and (of course) love and heartbreak. This will be a phenomenal show, well worth the three bucks.

There will be a free dinner-dicussion with Andrea after the show, open to all Wes kids who buy tickets.

KURT BROWN

Kurt Brown was born in Brooklyn and grew up on Long Island and in Connecticut. He spent many years in Aspen, Colorado, where he founded the Aspen Writers' Conference and edited the Aspen Anthology. Brown is editor of The Measured Word: On Poetry and Science and Verse & Universe: Poems about Science and Mathematics as well as The True Subject, Writing It Down for James, and Facing the Lion.

He is the author of three award-winning chapbooks and two collections of poems, Return of the Prodigals and More Things in Heaven & Earth. Brown’s poems have appeared in many periodicals, including Ontario Review, Massachusetts Review, Crazyhorse, and Southern Poetry Review.

Bessy Reyna: Conversación con una Escritora

Discuss social justice and poetry with award-winning Latin poet Bessy Reyna. Born in Cuba and raised in Panama, she is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and earned her Masters and Law degrees from the University of Connecticut.

Reyna’s poems and stories are found in U.S. and Latin American literary magazines. She has also been published in numerous anthologies including El Coro: A Chorus of Latino and Latina Poetry, In Other Words: Literature by Latinas of the United States, The Arc of Love: Lesbian Poems, and The Wild Good.

There will be a potluck reception before the discussion, at 7:00. You can also listen to readings of her poetry online.

Retiring US Poet Laureate to perform tonight

Tonight, Retiring US Poet Laureate Charles Simic will speak/perform in Memorial Chapel, as the Russell House's first program of the year*. This will be the world premiere of a new musical work based on his poetry.

Composer Robert Carl has set 15 of Simic’s poems for an ensemble of four solo voices, directed by Music Prof. Neely Bruce. Simic will present a reading of the texts, followed by the performance of the music which sets them.

Wesleyan Poetic Census deadline extended

The deadline for submitting to the Wesleyan Poetic Census has been extended to Friday, Sept. 12.

The Wesleyan Poetic Census Open Mic event will happen that same night. The time for that has just been announced: 9:00 PM in the '92 Theater.

Broad Street's First Tuesday Poetry Series

Brian Mitchard at Broad Street Books writes:

Broad Street Books hosts a monthly poetry reading, with a featured poet followed by an open mic, on the first Tuesday of every month.

Our featured poet for May is Faith Vicinanza. She is a poet, visiting artist, editor, publisher (Hanover Press), founder of the Wednesday Night Poetry Series, and was the event facilitator/creator of the Connecticut Poetry Festival. She's read from San Francisco to Stockholm and has several books of poetry out including "Faith Vicinanza: Greatest Hits" from Pudding House Press.

She and her late husband Peter rode touring bicycles from Key West Florida to St. Stephens, Canada and a book on their three-month journey is in the works. You can read the trip blog.

Congratulations Thesis Writers! (Part 2)

As a thesis writer myself, I wanted to share this poem with the Wesleying readership because it describes pretty excellently what I and many others went through today. I'm specifically directing this toward everyone who turned in a thesis, but it also applies to anyone who's ever worked really hard on a paper or problem set or some other undertaking, stayed up way too late, and then experienced the rush of turning it in. Which is... pretty much everyone who reads this blog.

Trying To Write

That day i finished
A small piece
For an obscure magazine
I popped it in the box

And such a starry elation
Came over me
That I got whistled at in the street
For the first time in a long time.

I was dirty and roughly dressed
And had circles under my eyes
And far far from flirtation
But so full of completion
Of a deed duly done
An act of consummation
That the freedom and force it engendered
Shone and spun
Out of my old raincoat.

It must have looked like love
Or a fabulous free holiday
To the young men sauntering
Down Berwick Street.
I still think this is most mysterious
For while I was writing it
It was gritty it felt like self-abuse
Constipation, desperately unsocial.
But done done done
Everything in the world
Flowed back
Like a huge bonus.

Hangman's Lime open mic poetry night

The Hangman's Lime, the student-run, undergraduate poetry magazine on campus, is hosting an open-mic reading on Wednesday, December 12 from 8:30 to 10:00 PM. It's our fifteenth anniversary! Come to the Zelnick Pavilion, lit up as it has been on these winter nights, and you can read, just listen, get copies of last year's issue and submit your own poems for publication this year.
