The first meeting of the Wesleyan Mountain Justice Coalition will take place tonight (Wednesday) at 8pm in the 200 Church Lounge. We will be talking about our next steps in our campaign against Bank of America!

We will be discussing setting up meetings with administration, finding alternate banks, bringing in speakers fighting mountain top removal, and anything else we can think of!

Organizing Workshop with the Sylvia Rivera Law Project
The Sylvia Rivera Law Project is a collective non-profit centered on gender, racial, social and economic justice. Led by collective member Gael Guevara, this workshop is an opportunity for conversation and skill-building for organizing at Wesleyan and beyond, and for exploration of ideas like community, accountability, leadership, identity, and what it means to be an "activist."

Resistance and Cooptation in Trans and Queer Political Struggles
Led by Dean Spade, founder of the Sylvia Rivera Law Project and a lawyer, social justice activist, and radical thinker. His work is grounded in grassroots and collective models of organizing, empowerment, and social justice. He's currently teaching a class at Harvard on social movements and the law. Come listen to a talk and participate in discussion about important issues facing queer and trans social movements today.

Includes free dinner from Typhoon.

Social Justice Day submission deadline extended

Miss the deadline to submit your session proposal for Social Justice Day? Never fear - today's deadline has been extended to Friday, March 7th to give more individual students, student groups, staff, and faculty the opportunity to share the issues they are passionate about with the Wesleyan community.

Social Justice Day is meant as an opportunity for student activists to collaboratively engage with each other and with their professors on issues that relate to social justice and social change.

If you know a professor who might be interested in an opportunity to share an outside interest that they haven't been able to relate in the classroom, let them know!

WSA Prez Matt Ball '08 writes about the nuts and bolts:

Social Justice Day is really a succession of sessions - anyone can apply to put on an hour session in which they have a discussion, give a lecture, or do something else creative. Because they'll all be organized together, there will be spillover from event to event, bringing in different people into different sessions in order to foster the kind of "message outreach" that we'd like to achieve. There will also be a lunch with a directed discussion, perhaps splitting into smaller groups to discuss different issues. In addition, groups can bring outside speakers if they'd like, and we have funding that we're willing to tap into to help groups fund their events.

Peace demonstration in Middletown! Tuesday!

Yo, friends who want to stop the killing. WesPeace has been doing some planning, and now the ball's in our court:

Peace Demonstration in Middletown, March to Recruitment Office

Tuesday, November 27th at 4 PM

• Congregate at the Usdan Courtyard after classes, between 4:00 and 4:15
• We will march down Wyllys, High, Washington, and Main to the Army National Guard Recruitment Office
• One group will stage a sit-in at the office, pass out a flier detailing a few "top military recruitment lies," (see below post) and talk to recruiters and passers-by. Others will continue to City Hall to follow-up on the presentation of the Middletown Common Council Resolution Against the War, reading the document aloud in front of City Hall.
• If you plan to go into the recruitment office, please e-mail acasale@wesleyan.edu to get on the e-mail list for discussion of the plans and tips on civil disobedience. We will also talk before the march.
• Bring signs & noisemakers and wear bright colors!

The message of our action is: END THE WAR! END THE MILITARIZATION OF YOUTH!
